In Search of Black
High school art. They had a "busy work" assignment...
The last thing a sub ever wants is a class with nothing to do. But there are times when the class isn't in the midst of anything (like a Tuesday after a four-day weekend after a big project was due), and the teacher has a last-minute necessary absence (like either she or one of her kids got sick). So, the class needs something to keep them busy.
The teacher had a word search and color page for just this contingency.
The color page was an interesting geometric figure. They could color it in or draw designs all over it. Easy points.
Fifth period, one girl went searching through the colored pencils looking for a good black. There were plenty of browns and navy blues, but the black pencils were all about an inch long (or shorter).
Me: "Black seems to be popular."
Student: "Well, this is a high school."
So true.

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

Hi Liz - do you remember the furore over "The dress" - see Wiki ... relative to our perception of colour ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThis had me chuckling. Of course, black goes well in both thoughts.
ReplyDeleteCould you please check my post again and let know if the photos are up?
OK, will do.
Delete*looks down at self* I guess I'm in all black today, which is complete opposite of my hair being magenta and blue. But in my defense, it was dark when I got dressed and just grabbed whatever clothing was at hand.
ReplyDeleteBlack is a popular clothing color. I'd bet your closet has lots and lots of examples ;)
DeleteWell, it's my favorite color...
ReplyDeleteHa! I like that girl, whoever she is.
ReplyDeleteI like her comment and black would be popular. I hope she finally found a black pencil
ReplyDeleteShe made due with one that was about the length of my thumbnail.
DeleteThat's really funny. How self-aware she is :)
ReplyDeleteI used to dress in all black when I was younger. Now, I guess, black means other occasions. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOh, people still dress in all black. I don't think it's such a statement.
DeleteDid she find one that was long enough to use??
ReplyDeleteShe used a short one.
DeleteI adore the comments on this! I'm currently wearing leopard print pajama pants and a shirt featuring a cat's face but black is my favorite outdoor color. Be well! ~grin~ It's nearing 11pm here; I hope you have a good rest of the evening@
ReplyDeleteBlack is a favorite clothing color generally, I think. When I saw this, I was in bed getting ready to go to sleep :)
Delete"Well, this is a high school."
ReplyDeleteClassic. Love that response!
That kid's sharp.
ReplyDeleteYup. She is.
DeleteHa! Only too true on the black. Did she ever find some?
ReplyDeleteInteresting comment from that girl.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the students say things that I just have to repeat.
DeleteBlack makes me look about seventy years old but I lived in it as a teenager!
ReplyDeleteIt's a teenage thing, I guess.
DeleteHa! I needed that little laugh. lol
