Annual Cross
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.😉
Let's go a little high concept this week. Parallel universes. (Warning: link takes you to TV Tropes. Click, and follow links, at your own risk.)
Have you heard of the concept? It's the idea that there are an infinite number of universes, called the multiverse, that diverge in small (and sometimes large) ways. It's been used in various ways in just about every sci fi TV show.
What if these parallel worlds could only intersect (so one could cross over into them) on specific days of the year (like, their orbits are completely different around the sun, and they only coincide in the same physical space, albeit in a different dimension, one day a year)?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

That might already be happening and I don't even know. Now if I saw multiples of me like Worf did on TNG, I would check the mushrooms I have been eating
ReplyDeleteLOL. That would be scary.
DeleteThis is a topic that I think of often. Sometimes I get these deja vu sensations that make me wonder about it all may be a connection to an alternate reality of my own life.

Could be...
DeleteThat sounds interesting. Like, what if you accidentally crossed over into the other dimension and you had to survive a year until you got the chance to go back? It would make for a good story.
ReplyDeleteI've seen parallel universes on shows a few times and those episodes always entertain me. Not sure what I'd do if it was real though lol!
ReplyDeleteWell, consider this more story fodder.
DeleteThe concept of parallel universes has been discussed in SF literature for as long as I can remember (I've read SF for some 55 years). If we coul cross over from time to time - I know people would be trying, and who knows what the effect on history could be. I would dread it. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm going with some tried and true sci fi concepts for the next couple weeks.
DeleteI think I have been in mine for the last 5 yrs. I came on that one day and have not yet found out how to get back! :)
ReplyDeleteHopefully it's a better universe :)
Deletehaha....not so much. My pain got worse about that time, so I am thinking it is cause I fell into that universe.....I WANT OUT NOW....
DeleteNow you just need to figure out how to get back...
DeleteYou'd have to be careful not to get stuck!
ReplyDeletePack lots of extra undies, just in case.
You in that universe probably wear the same size. I'm sure he'd let you borrow ;)
DeleteHave you heard of the Mandela Effect? Berenstein or Berenstain Bears? Interview with A Vampire or Interview with THE Vampire. It's compelling stuff and all to do with Parallel universes!
ReplyDeleteI had not. I just looked it up. Freaky.
DeleteCool concept. I can see this as a major sort of holiday where people visit their doppelganger for a few hours or something. ~grin~ Be well!
ReplyDeleteThat's assuming we know about it ;)
DeleteThat would be interesting if I knew it was happening. I used to watch the Green Lantern tv show with the kids I babysat for and I loved the plot twists when time was altered. Of course, if I didn't know it was happening, it wouldn't matter much. It's hard to have an opinion on something you aren't aware of…
ReplyDeleteThat is a good question. Would we be aware of the possibility?
DeleteLOL it does pop up a lot in shows. I think it could be neat if you like traveling for extended times. Not cool if you had a duplicate you there. But could be interesting if they were all slightly different places and you wanted a year of travel.
