At the Orange County Fair

Last week I made my annual trip to the Orange County Fair.

I'm not much of a ride person. Or really, an eat-all-the-crazy-things person. But, I was hungry, so I got a simple "little" hot dog...

And I got to share in the Australian Battered Potatoes (a fair favorite)...

It wasn't terribly hot. A bit humid. We looked at all the exhibits. Someone had done a version of Girl with a Pearl Earring, only this "girl" had "pearl" earbuds and an iPod.

But the exhibits I look forward to the most are the knitting and crochet. Naturally. And there always seems to be one that grabs my interest. Or makes me laugh. Or both. This year...

As you can see, she won a ribbon for her work. Well deserved. (I'm looking at the octopus hat.) I'm in awe of her creativity.

Before we left, we had to have dessert. I thought about the s'mores donut. And the deep fried Twinkies got a look. In the end, we went for the traditional funnel cake. (I forgot to take a picture before it was eaten, so I got a picture of the booth.)

Then we went to Baskin-Robbins for ice cream. (Much cheaper than the fair.)

And I didn't get sunburned! (This is huge. For me.)

  1. Glad you didn't get sunburned! Sounded like a fun day! I always like to look at the crafts section; it inspires me to be creative for like a day or two :)

    1. Well, the whole reason I didn't get sunburned was because I wore the sunscreen. It's a necessity.

  3. I would've been fried to a crisp.
Octopus hat next on your list? Then you could do all of the animals.

  4. Alex is so right!!

In Illinois State Fair, there was a great craft tent. Such creativity. But the main tent was for livestock. You have not lived until you have seen the blue ribbon for the largest sow (female swine) !

    1. We skirted the livestock area. It's there. Just not really our thing.

  7. You have to come to the New York State Fair and try the awesome $1 baked potato. You should see the lines for it. And you wouldn't believe the knitting, crocheting and needlework. I work with someone who enters needlework every year and has won awards. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  10. Our fair starts the first week of Sept. But the Wilson Co. fair, county next to mine comes in Aug. Usually the hottest part of the month. I did not go the last couple of yrs but but I think I will grab my camera and go this yr. Like you...my days of enjoying the crazy fun rides have past so I just like to walk around, look at people and check out the exhibits! Not much on the food there either. Although I love the grilled corn on the cob.

    1. The L.A. County Fair is also in September. And it's usually icky hot for it.

If you do take pics, see if your fair has an Instagram account. I know the O.C. Fair does. And they repost pics people take.

    1. Orange County sounds a lot less lovely when you grew up there. It's not a terrible place by any means, but there are some issues...

  13. Love the octopus hat which is so unique and glad she won. I always like fairs but, yes, cheaper to eat somewhere else...and probably healthier

  14. I love going to the fair! That octopus hat is awesome. Will you be making one? Tweens would love them. I like fair food. But haven't tried any of the 'weird' ones.

That octopus hat is amazing! I'd never be caught dead wearing it, but I do love the creativity that went into it! :)

    1. The secret to not getting sunburned is sunscreen. You're lucky you're not a lobster after being a hammock long enough to sleep ;)
