Flu Season
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)
What if viruses are a message from another set of peoples (aliens, perhaps) or from another time?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

If they are, I don't like the messages they are sending of sickness, not feeling well, etc. I think I would find a way to stop those messages from coming.
ReplyDeletebetty
But what if the messages weren't meant to make us sick? What if the only problem was with the delivery system?
DeleteI was going to say what Betty said. If that was the way some other culture communicated then they need to take some classes in communication.

Tossing It Out
Yeah, it's not ideal...
DeleteWell then they're getting hung up on an awful lot!
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteI'd say their messages are not well-received!
ReplyDeleteWell...no... But if you've ever had a well-meaning text or phone call go awry...
DeleteWhat Sherry said!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know what kind of messages they are sending when I fell like crap...especially the ones when I throw up. They obviously have a poor way of communicating
ReplyDeleteViruses are living things, so why stop with them? Maybe every set of DNA is a message saying something else!
ReplyDeletePerhaps viruses are interstellar terrorism? If, instead, this is their way of saying "take me to your leader", it is a big cosmic fail. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteBut why are we assuming that they mean it in a bad way? How many well-intentioned attempts at communication go bad?
DeleteViruses from Aliens? Hmmm. It seemed the viruses always hit the well-behaved students in my classrooms.
ReplyDeleteOh. That's interesting...
DeleteHmm. So then do different types of aliens send different strains of flu? And I'm not sure we're getting the messages!
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting wrinkle...
DeleteWell, they are, except those creatures trying to communicate are so small that they can't effectively communicate and we end up having to purge or kill them. Right?
ReplyDeleteLiz, you know I think some viruses are sent by other people, but not the supernatural kind. I think they are engineered by our own government and hostiles alike. Some viruses aren't deadly, but bad enough to send a flag up that says, "The Virus X strain affects target group as planned." Call me paranoid, but I believe scientist are secretively finding ways to test society for terminate the weakest people. Interesting question!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm good skipping that message even if well intended. lol
