One World
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)
Last week I was in a social studies class, and I noticed a world map on the wall. It was one of those that had all the flags of the various countries of the world pictured. And it got me thinking about how in a lot of science fiction when people are dealing with other worlds, they only deal with one government. (I'm sure you all can tell me of examples where this is not true.) This made me wonder...
What if our world only had one government?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

That would be an awful lot for one government to handle. It would have to be like a United Nations setup, where there is a central meeting place, and all the representative have to run their own territories.
ReplyDeleteProbably. I just wonder at one world governments in sci fi.
DeleteThe government would have to be everywhere in order for it to work for the whole world. I don't think there could ever be one because each place/country is so different and everyone has different beliefs.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing that makes it difficult--how different we all are.
DeleteEvery place is so different. It would probably be pretty tough to get everyone to follow the same government. Maybe it would be something like how the US government is set up, with individual countries having local power and then there being some overarching world government.
ReplyDeleteCertainly an interesting concept to think about. Could be great but also could be chaos!
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteI think it's the way to go but I also think it will take us a long long time to get there. Could be an interesting journey...
ReplyDeleteIt will one day if one believes the Biblical account of the end of the world. Until then, I'm glad we have more than 1 governments; means the end is nowhere in sight.
ReplyDeletebetty
It might be a while.
DeleteI wonder if we would be closer to world peace if we only had one government!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it would make things worse or better.
DeleteHave you heard on the New World Order conspiracy theories?
ReplyDeleteVaguely. I try to avoid such nonsense.
DeleteOh I think of 1984 when I think of one government. Now if it was like Star Trek....that's a different story but I still feel one government would be too much power which makes people do very bad things because the greed of power, I believe, overrules the greed for money. Money buys power.
ReplyDeleteAs an avid reader of science fiction, I think it could happen only with a world wide disaster destroying most of the population of the world. A strongman or strongwoman takes over, like in North Korea. With the one government, no one has anything to compare their life to. In some ways of thinking, the Roman Empire could have become that one government if they had not rotted from within. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteYou could be right.
