Actually Watching?
A week ago we had Thanksgiving. A week before that was the continuation high school's annual Turkey Day. They changed things up a bit this year, calling out students alphabetically rather than by classes. And so, there was no need to keep them in the same class, so they got to attend all their classes.
This was good as it gave the students something to do besides sit and complain. But some students decided they didn't want to go and eat. (I spent some time convincing one girl she should go and just see what was there. Her name was called, and I urged her to go. She did. Upon her return, she said it was good and she was happy she went.)
The teacher I was covering left Planet Earth for them to watch. (It was a science class.)
I popped in the DVD and sat back. Much of the class seemed to be engaged in things other than watching the show. But then I started to hear things...
Things that related to the show. Things that made it seem like...they were actually watching the DVD.
Astounding.
Of course, this was one for one class, but still. Kind of a minor miracle.

They actually watched? How bizarre! Maybe the upcoming holiday put them in a compliant mood or something.
ReplyDeleteThat is neat that they serve a meal like that. Son's elementary school did that and invited parents to come. That food was delicious! I told my kids never to pass up a free meal :)

My class talk in movies and fiddle with things they shouldn't. I can only show them 20 minutes at a time because they lose concentration completely after that. I love those Bill Nye the Science Guy Youtube clips because they run for an average of 23 minutes!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, these kids have seen every one of those. 3 times. So, they don't even hold their attention any longer than a minute or so.
DeleteI bet as a teacher you treasure those moments!
ReplyDeleteThey watched? December is a good month for miracles. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat does it say about me that my brain kept wanting to add a period after Planet Earth?

Blame it on the turkey! That tryptophan apparently has a hypnotic effect.
ReplyDeleteThat must be it!
DeleteI love that you have Turkey Day at your school. I love that they feed you and on a half-day! I am sad that so many kids think they are too cool (that seems to be the thing at my kids' schools) to participate in events like Turkey Day. My kids are all-in! They have been raised to have ridiculous enthusiasm for all things holiday...it's genetic!
ReplyDeleteI think many of them were dubious as to the quality of the food. Those that went were glad they did.
