A Portal?

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if you found a locked gate with no fencing on either side? (Assume the area feels weird, like "off" or like there's some strange energy.)

  1. I'd back away slowly and leave. I wouldn't want to disturb that area.

    1. I wonder. Do we pay attention to the energy, or would we assume we were overreacting?

  2. I would be tempted to try it. I would probably throw a stick through it to see what happens but, in the end, I would back away and trust my instincts.

    1. Oooh, I wonder what would happen to the stick.

  3. I read a blog written by a gentleman who hikes the area around Joshua Tree National Park and, the other week, he ran across just that - a gate with no fencing on either side. (I forget if it was locked or not). I've read too many SF stories and books to try to go around such a gate.

    1. It wasn't. The gate he photographed was wide open. You caught me. That photo was the inspiration for this question.

  4. I would put on safety line, tie it tight and go over and visit.

  5. I am wondering of what use is a locked gate if there aren't fences? ... I would just pass by thinking it's quite weird.

  6. haha....I am not sure I ever saw one like that was locked but I have to shake my head when I see a gate over a driveway like that but all you would have to do is drive around it.....but in this case I would have to wonder if there is a electric fencing under ground that would shock me. What would I do....dummy me, without testing would prob just walk around the gate.....and see what happens.

    1. I think on a driveway it would work if you couldn't drive on the non-paved part. But that's not really true, is it?

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
