Missing a Day

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if you woke up this morning with no memory of yesterday? (At some point after you woke up, you realized that it was a day later than the day you thought it was. This is not a case of quarantime, or you thought it was Monday but it's Tuesday. Nope, you've actually lost a day somewhere.)

  1. I had a minor procedure where I did not recall the six hours after I woke up. It was very unnerving. So losing a whole day would be traumatic.

  2. I'd be checking myself into a hospital for a neurological workup.

  3. I don't think I'd tell anyone! My family would seriously think I was getting senile, instead of just joking when I forget something! It would be frightening. I lose days when I have vertigo, but I am aware I lost them. It's maddening to waste days doing absolutely nothing.

    1. Well, if you're sick, then it's not really a wasted day. It's a day of recovery.

  4. This would absolutely terrify me. I once had a drop out of memory for about 20 minutes (no alcohol was involved) but I was with a girlfriend. She was able to tell me what had happened, but I had absolutely no memory of it.(she was also positive I did not have a seizure). So a full day...yes, the 20 minutes was bad enough.

    1. Wow, how scary. I wonder what blanked your memory.

  5. My problem has always been the day earlier thing, especially when I worked. It's the worst to go all day thinking it's Friday only to realize later it's only Thursday and still have to work the next day lol!

  6. So you knew me back in my fun days of university.

  7. It would freak me out! I would hope someone could help me figure out what went on that day I couldn't remember!

  8. What a fun 'what if.' I would question if I had a dissociative disorder, such as dissociative amnesia. Best wishes for a beautiful week.

    1. It's possible. That would probably be the simplest explanation (assuming no alcohol or drugs were involved).

  9. Not able to remember anything I did the previous day will be terrifying. But there have been plenty of instances when I have thought it's Tuesday when it was actually Monday, and I have thought it was Monday when it was Tuesday!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
