Self Made

Just like last week, I took a look at the letter for today to figure out what I was going to write about. And just like last week, I was a bit lost. I'm sure you've heard of Stumptown. And Supergirl. Those are the only two S shows I'm currently watching.

But then I took a look at a list of upcoming shows, and I found something on Netflix that sounded interesting, so I checked it out. And yep, I liked it enough to recommend it.

It's not so much a TV show as a limited series. Four episodes and you're done. And it's based on a true story. Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker is about the first African-American self-made millionaire. And she did it about 100 years ago.

Here's a blurb, via Wikipedia:
Self Made is a fictionalized depiction of "the untold and highly irreverent story of black hair care pioneer and mogul Madam C. J. Walker and how she overcame hostile turn-of-the-century America, epic rivalries, tumultuous marriages and some trifling family to become America’s first Black, self-made female millionaire.

It's got a great cast, and the characters brush up against some famous historical figures. Take a look:

There are a few movie-style flourishes. She daydreams in musical production numbers. And it's told with modern sensibilities in mind. But it's still worth the time.

How many of you have Netflix? Have you seen this?

  2. Hi Liz - sounds like a really interesting film ... I'd like to see it - thanks for telling us about it. I don't have Netflix - but one day I'll catch it. I thought of Sundance .. but of course that's within the title! Take care - Hilary

  3. Sounds great, and I love Octavia Spencer. She was so good in "La couleur des sentiments", the color of the feelings?

    1. Funny how they translate titles into different languages. Here this was The Help.

  5. I have Netflix, but I have yet to watch this program. I'm currently in a Schitt's Creek loop with forays into the original Star Trek series on Amazon Prime.

  6. I've heard about that woman and I'd love to watch a series about her. Except for the musical production numbers part. Not a fan.

  8. I'm like Pam. We rely mostly on other unsubscribed sources. But what an interesting concept! Thank you for sharing. As for Duran Duran, I have an inclusive best of album. Later I listened to Panic at the Disco ('Death of a Bachelor') and then some classic Johnny Cash. :) I/we have eclectic tastes. Take care!

  9. We do have that show here on Netflix, but I haven't watched it. I'm actually waiting for an "S" show at the moment to hit Netflix - the final series of Schitt's Creek. I know it has already aired overseas, but it is coming here in about 3 weeks.

  10. Wanna watch "Self-Made." Right now, watching Succession on HBO. I like series showing rich people acting badly.

  16. We have Netflix, and I've added it to the list, but haven't gotten around to watching it. My sister has a Starz subscription on Amazon, and I've been binge watching stuff on that.
