A Different Immigration Problem
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. 😉
What if we had immigrants coming from alien planets?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

Oh, have you seen the movie "District 9"? Fascinating and fun on so many levels. Be well!
ReplyDeleteI never could sit through it, but I know what you mean. That's one way of answering the question ;)
DeleteHmmm...something to think about.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking we'd find whole new ways to be racist.
ReplyDeleteWe'd definitely need to establish an interplanetary social conduct code-book for alien and humanoid to learn about strange their strange neighbors. Its important lifeforms know whats acceptable practice on their friendly alien planet when visiting. Great inspiration for writing Liv.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I got to be careful how I answer this. I hope they would come legally and that if they didn't speak the language of the country that they would learn it :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Some people believe that some of us are descendants of aliens from other planets. I could see a story in which the descendants tell newbies to go back from where they came.
ReplyDeletewell I guess I would have to ask why they were coming here and what they wanted. Are they here to stay or to do away with us!? Personally, I think they should send them back esp if they are moving to Nashville. We have a billboard that reads~ stop moving to Nashville, we are full! We have had way to mamy moving into our town so we don't need aliens...
ReplyDeleteThat is a good question. Since I didn't specify, it's up to you.
DeleteOops...meant to tell you...I started out with that type of camera many years ago. I carried everywhere for four yrs in my purse but when it kicked the bucket I got another one, newer model and I did not like it at all. I now have a Nikon D40. D60 and a D200. That Cybershot and another point and shoot...plus my cell and a film Minolta. Not camera poor for sure...haha Hoping that camera starts doing a good job for you.
ReplyDeleteIt's doing better now that purples are showing up.
DeleteWe just are not evolved enough to handle this. Just look at the many people who panic due to fear, prejudice and dullness of mind shoot innocent people. I agree...District 9 is a good movie to see
ReplyDeleteI think people were surprised by it at the time, thinking we'd be more evolved. But no. I don't think we are.
DeleteIf it happened today, each country would create their own alien immigration laws, and aliens would go where it was easiest to get in, sneaking across borders into other places if they deemed it a better situation.
ReplyDeleteIf it happened 100 years in the future, maybe there would be some sort of Global League of Nations to determine immigration laws to Earth as a whole.
You're probably right.
DeleteHow do we know we don't? "Men in Black" was such an entertaining movie and that was its premise.
ReplyDeleteTrue.
DeleteGood question! So many factors to take into consideration. Do they come in peace? Can they interbreed with humans? Would they want to integrate? Can they teach us anything? And hundreds more questions! Very thought-provoking.
ReplyDeleteGood questions. And since I didn't specify, feel free to answer them as you choose.
DeleteThat will possibly launch inter-galactic warfare!
ReplyDeleteIt could.
DeleteYes, District 9 was an excellent take on alien immigration as was Alien Nation with Mandy Pitinkin (aka Inigo Montoyo). I don't know what would happen but I'll wager if aliens wanted to immigrate it wouldn't go over well. Oh, and thanks for giving me another idea :)
