A Life of Solitude

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

I saw this article online, and I got to wondering...

What if you could get a "job" as a hermit?

  1. Haha! Get paid to not interact with people? I'd do it. At least for a while. I bet I'd get a lot of writing done. And I wouldn't miss dealing with people's shenanigans.

  2. Sign me up! I think I could do this and do it well. I thrive on solitude.

    1. According to the article I linked to, the internet would be off limits. But I'm sure one could work that out with one's employer.

  4. Well I have to admit, I guess I'd miss all my trekker friends but from a blogger perspective, yeah your question posits another question... why we have friendly geeks and home alone supernerds.

  5. If I could have worked for Charles Hamilton, then why not?

  6. As much as I love just being at home, I like people too much.

    1. Especially if it meant limiting contact with your mother?

  9. I can do it for a bit but not for a lengthy time. Besides, no interaction means exactly that and i think human beings are social creatures. Now if it was for 1 week or even 2..I would be ok

    1. Yeah, at a certain point I get too much into my own head and need interaction with others. But it's fun to contemplate for short periods of time.

  10. I think there used to be jobs where being a hermit was a plus - a fire watcher in those towers, or a lighthouse keeper, just as two examples. I'm an introvert, but not a hermit. Wouldn't work for me.

    1. Ah yes, those jobs would have totally been for hermits.

  11. Interesting question. I'd be tempted to take the assignment. However, I live like a hermit and then get the life stories of those encountered when I leave the house. It's like I'm some sort of people magnet. Maybe that's for a reason. Then again, I'm a minor cat magnet, as you know. Thanks for the kind words on the lost cat that wandered into my life. I'm urging my husband to seek a shelter stray as it's clear we are emotionally open to adoption now. Years ago new feline mother Luna's adoption of *me* fixed my allergies with proper medication. When Tilly and Jezebel passed my path, became family members, and then Luna passed away in 2014, my husband joked since that he gets to 'pick' the next cat. I said today, 'start looking'. ~grin~ We shall see. My dream job would be as a lighthouse keeper on the Outer Banks with a kitty or three.

    1. I get that too--people talking to me about random things when I leave the house. I guess they need someone to talk to, and we have friendly faces.

  12. I would be all over that. Though really I guess I am more or less since I work from home. lol I can go weeks with just seeing the people at the grocery store and I'm totally okay with that ;) But I do have the internet for interaction (and job) so a physical hermit only.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
