False Alarm

It was Monday morning. I had gotten this particular assignment more than a week ago. She's a teacher I've subbed for many, many times, so I wasn't anticipating too much when I walked into the office.

I got the usual question. When I said I was in for Ms. M, I got perplexed looks. "But the field trip is Thursday."

It used to be a regular occurrence. I'd show up to a school only to be told that the teacher wasn't out. Or worse, I'd go to the classroom and the teacher would be there, no absence planned. But that hasn't happened for a while now. It hasn't happened in a good, long while. (We're talking a few years.)

They checked the teacher's mailbox. Sure enough, she had left lesson plans.

And that's when one of the administrators joined the conversation. She had talked to the teacher on Friday, and this teacher's absence on Monday had come up.

So, I was in the right place. Whew.

Geez, guys! Don't scare me like that.

(The teacher was out on that field trip on Thursday, too. Which I also covered. And considering this is the most interesting thing I have to write about those two days tells you how much trouble I had with them.)

    1. Me too. What helped was that, especially on the field trip day, many of the students were absent.

  2. Would you rather students that behave or blog fodder? (If only they knew that's why you really sub...)

    1. I just follow orders. I had no idea it would be an issue.

  4. I'm sure you're actually really pleased to have nothing more to say about the classes, rather than posts for the next month about all the weird and wonderful things that happened in class. ;-)

  5. Ugh, I could live without those false scares. No fair.

    1. Yeah. At least it wasn't a real we-don't-need-you-here-today thing. That's worse.

  6. An easy class is boring, blog-wise, but it makes for an easier day for the sub. :)

I don't know why the office staff was so confused. Like a teacher couldn't be out of class for two separate days.

  7. I'm amazed that things aren't more organized in this day and age. Good on you for hanging in there and doing a good job.

    1. Oh, things are fairly organized. It's just that some days things go awry. Like anything that's done by humans.

    1. It happens. At least the teacher and I both knew what was happening and were prepared.

  10. School office staff can be very confusing sometimes. There's a local elementary school I once went in to talk to the principal about my subbing application, and the people in the office just stared at me when I walked in the door. No welcome or "how may I help you?" Just stares.

    1. Some schools are strange. It's a culture thing.

  12. Hi Liz - looking forward to hearing about Thursday and the day out! Glad it did sort itself out though ... I hate going somewhere to be told I was superfluous to requirements or the subject wasn't even happening ... cheers Hilary

  13. Does having an irregular schedule bother you? Each day is kind of a different job. :)

    1. I like the irregular schedule. Keeps things interesting for me.

  14. That is good that the students didn't give you any trouble, a relief I would imagine.

  15. Yay! No trouble! Glad you didn't waste gas going to the school when you weren't needed – that would have been frustrating. :(

    1. It wouldn't have been a waste. As I had been sent there, the district either would have sent me elsewhere, or the school would have had to make use of me somehow. (In other words: I get paid still when the mistake is theirs.)

  17. Oh, that would be a tad annoying, showing up just to find there was a mistake. Glad it worked out, and hope it doesn't happen to you again. Phew.

  18. I would be very annoyed if I drove all the way to a school to find out there'd been a mistake!

  19. Communcation can be a tricky thing. It hasn't happen for a while. It was plan for me to go to a client place, no client and a simple phone call would be nice.

  20. It must be lovely to have a peaceful couple of days (if teaching can ever be called "peaceful"!).
    That's Purrfect
