Unintended Consequences

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.

What if you (or your main character) executed a silly prank, but then those around you totally misinterpreted it and turned the incident into a major issue/problem? Would you come forward and own up, or would you hide in the shadows?

  1. I would probably come forward and own up, though I have no idea at all what kind of prank I would be able to come up with in the first place....

    1. Well, if you tried something and it went really, really bad. But good for you for coming forward.

  2. It depends if I believed no one would ever find out or not... so what does that say about me huh? I don't play pranks so I have nothing to worry about though. It would certainly cure you of playing pranks anyway.

  3. It depends on the situation for me. I have done little pranks or said something I thought was funny and later on I found out people took it all wrong and were bent out of shape. I let that alone as I thought what would be the point? They get all upset over something this minor what will they do when something major happens. On the other hand, I have had stupid things done and owned up to it because I thought it was the right thing to do and suffer the consequences.

  4. I would totally own up. No questions asked. My characters? They're a different story. Some of them would.

  5. I'm way too much of a wimp to do more than sneak up behind someone as far as pranks go. I hope I'd own up, but honestly...I'm not sure if I would.

  6. I'm really not one for pulling pranks, but if something like this were to happen I would hide in the shadows. I'd be far too embarrassed to do anything else..

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
