At the heart of much speculative fiction
(and fiction in general) is a question.
What if?
On Tuesdays
I like to throw one out there and see what you
make of it. Do with it as you please.
If a for-instance is not specified,
feel free to interpret that instance as you
wish. And if you find this becomes
a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a
thank you in the acknowledgements.
My Facebook lit up with birthdays last week. Which got me thinking...
What if birthday wishes were real? That is, what if when you blow out the candles on your cake, that wish you make is an actual spell that you can cast (if you do it all correctly)?
My personal blog about the random things that are in my life: writing, knitting, and substitute teaching.

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

OMG! Yes! What if we could turn wishes into reality? Would be so awesome!
ReplyDeleteFun question! There are a few books that address this. I would be so paranoid about something going wrong. Sure, I'd become a famous author, but somehow it would work out that I never had my two children and they'd disappear (or something equally tragic). The Irish in me doesn't trust anything too good to be true.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the price. I hadn't thought about the price...
DeleteIt seems that whenever I've read of magical wishes coming true there is also a price to pay. But maybe that's because the wish isn't done correctly... Perhaps the correct way isn't wishing for personal gain.
ReplyDeleteAh yes! Donna is perfectly correct. The secret is wishing for something for the common good! You commented on my blog that there were a lot of birthdays around. I think it's something to do with conceptions around Christmas and New Year... wink wink.
ReplyDeleteRight... I hadn't counted back 9 months...
DeleteI think its because of the cold weather. Usually too after a power outage in cold climates 9 months later there will be a baby boom so to speak :)

Well I would love it! I am going to believe their is no ulterior motive aftewards. the wish simply comes true-yippee!
ReplyDeleteDidn't they do that sort of with that movie Liar Liar with Jim Carey a few years back that the birthday wish came true?
