I was on Twitter the other day, and I saw this tweet:
Today’s date is 10 / 10 / 2014. It’s so rare that it will never happen again.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) October 10, 2014
And being the contrarian I sometimes am, I thought, "Yeah, but..."What if someone changed the calendar?
Because, you know, it could be better. More logical. More streamlined. The only thing that keeps us using it is habit, really.
It's been done tons of times before, why not again? New Year's could be a new day, new names for months. Of course, now most of the world is using this one. What a pain it would be to change it.
ReplyDeleteI believe the last time it was changed, most average folk could not read or write. Now people would be very upset and it would not come up so easily. Can you imagine the upheaval if Christmas was in another month, or Halloween? It would not only disrupt the calendar, but the people, the businesses, TV-many things would go wonky
ReplyDeleteI think if they changed the calendar, I would like to have all the months have the same amount of days to even things out a bit.

Sounds fair. If it changed we would not need to calculate different things for different number of days in a month.
ReplyDeleteIf they changed it so the years were longer it'd be great because then I'd be younger! But I guess since the year depends on our revolution around the sun then that won't change :(
ReplyDeleteThere's a website that calculates your age on various planets. I forget where it's at. Our age on Uranus is a very interesting thing.
DeleteHmm...that is true! It would throw us completely off. The way the seasons have been lately, the only thing that lets me know what month it is is that calendar we have. Otherwise, I'd be confused as to whether it were really October because it's been so warm!
ReplyDeleteTell me about it! Capris and sandals in October. Although, that's really not that unusual around these parts.
