Prediction Thwarted

Thursdays are "What if?" days at LoG. I come up with the craziest question I can think of with the only intent being to jump start story ideas. Let the question take it where it will...

What if an oracle predicts that someone has some major destiny, but before that destiny can be realized, something major changes (revolution, natural disaster) making that destiny moot?

  1. Hmmm. That's a cool "what if?"

I suspect it'll lead to deep thoughts for the rest of the day.

  2. That is good question. I may have to play with that next month when I embark on a story a day in may. Thanks for the prompt!

  3. I think he's not much of an oracle, then.

It's kind of why I don't think predicting the future really works. Things can change all the time.

  4. That is an interesting “what if”.
Being the overly logical person I am, logically I would assume an oracle would already be aware of major worldly events and would alter his or her predications accordingly.

    1. That's where the difficulty lies in this what if. Would the oracle see it coming?

  5. Intriguing question. I'm not certain how oracles work. Most divination techniques only outline a path for the querent, who is in control to walk that path or chose another. The querent can never be separated from his/her free will, that is, unless there is a natural disaster or a revolution.

    Shoot, you're making me think!

  6. Or is the character's destiny really moot? It probably depends on how that 'someone' reacts. Would they fight for this destiny or fall victim to the disaster?

  7. Everyone creates their own destiny anyway...

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
