Famous

Thursday. Criminalistics.

It was passing period, so I was stationed at the door, greeting students as they entered. A boy entered, then he came back out. He asked if he could go to the restroom.

This is not a notable occurrence. This happens daily. What was notable was how he asked me, calling me by my name.

I had not written my name up on the board. (The board was covered by a screen. There was no place for me to put my name.)

It always startles me when they know my name. Considering how many long terms I've done in the past couple years, and considering how many of the students I did recognize in the classes, it was not out of the question that I had had him in class before. Or that he knew who I was.

But it still, I feel like they don't know who I am.

They know who I am.

Not a bad thing, really.

  1. difference, if I was a sub and had the same students time after time, I would want them to remember. I would always be trying to make them laugh as they learn, and I think that way I would stick in their heads

    1. Oh, they remember the regular subs. They've mentioned other subs to me before, ones who I am acquainted with. It just startles me when they remember me, especially since I've done *a lot* of middle school this year, and they don't know me.

  2. Ha! Of course, easier for them to remember a few sub's names, than you to remember the hundreds of students'.

  3. I never remembered the subs we had when I was in school (50+ years ago now), aside from Mrs. Austin. I married her nephew. I now call her sons "cousin."

  4. Impressive that he made the mental effort to remember your name. Smart kid!

  5. Well, some people remember and recall things better than others. I always find it interesting when I make a connection with a young person. I made one recently, but he has now gone off to college. But I could tell that he was surprised that so many of the things that he loved were things that I also loved and that I could show him stuff that he'd never seen before. When he left for college he said, "I'm so glad I took the time to get to know you." That was really nice, because I suspect that when he first encountered me, he was probably like "this GenX dude is going to be cringy and boring."
