Starting Over

Last week it was too hot. I just couldn't with the yarn. But I'm kind of between projects at the moment, so it wasn't like I was neglecting anything.

But I've been thinking about a couple scarves I have in progress.

I think it might be time to frog and start over.

I started "In the Meantime" a couple weeks ago. Then I realized that I had misread the stitch pattern, so I ripped out the wrong row and redid. And I didn't like it so much any more.

I don't hate it. But I think I might like a different stitch pattern more.

Then there's the scarf I started in 2019.

Again, I don't hate it. But as long as I'm looking up crochet stitch patterns, I might as well see if I can find a way more interesting stitch pattern for this one.

So, I found a couple. One is the cobweb stitch. The other is called the astro cluster. (Check out the links to see what they look like.) It took me a while to winnow it down to those two, but I think that's where I'm going to start.

Only now, which is which? Initially, I thought cobweb would be for the pink yarn, which is a light yarn, but bulkier than the brown. But maybe the cobweb would look better on the fairly fine brown yarn, and the astro would look better in the pink.

I'm going to hem and haw about it a bit more. It's supposed to cool into the 80s F this week (that's in the upper 20s C), so while it might be a bit warm, I might be more inclined to do something. I can at least rip out these scarves so I'm ready to start anew.

What do you think. Cobweb for the finer yarn or the thicker? I'm open to suggestions.

  1. Oh I so love the finer looking one in the brown/beige color. Loving that look

    1. Unfortunately, that yarn snaps so easily. I have broken it so many times in the unraveling, and I'm not even done ripping that out yet.

  2. I know nothing about knitting but that astro pattern looks cool.

    1. Sounds good. You're the only one with a definite opinion. Thanks.

  4. I don't know much about stitch patterns. They both seem nice. I think your judgment in figuring out which one works would be better than mine.

  5. The cobweb pattern reminds me (possibly) of one of the patterns I used in an afghan I made back in 1972-74 (which I still have) there were various stitch patterns and you made a strip of crochet in each pattern and sewed them together. It was really enjoyable as someone who only started to crochet in the fall of 1970. I would like cobweb in a worsted type thickness, I think, depending on what you want to make. But, just me, I liked the Astro a teeny bit more.

    1. The pink yarn is closer to worsted, but not quite. I think technically it's DK. The brown yarn is much finer.

  6. I think the cobweb one would be perfect for the brown one.

  8. Where do you find people who buy scarves you make? I have a drawer full of scarves I never wear because it seems now in the winter its never cold enough. We barely get a freeze anymore. Ha! I say that and maybe this winter will be a frozen one.

    1. I don't. I don't think I've ever sold a scarf.

  9. I like the cobweb best. The Astro Cluster looks easier though. I used to crochet baby sweaters and hats with a pattern with clusters like that.

    1. I'm going to use both of those stitch patterns. I'm just wavering on which to use with which yarn.

  10. I can see both the pink and brown in the cobweb, mighty pretty. With the pink, it would be interesting to see how the blue parts would lie in the design.

  11. I love the astro cluster one! I think the pink would be really pretty in that. And I'm impressed that you're using more interesting stitches! I feel like I'm finally getting a good handle on the single, double, and half double, so the fancier ones are still beyond my skillset for now.

    1. Oh, but they're not. The cobweb is made up mostly of double crochet stitches worked into the same stitch. It makes a "shell". All crochet is is ch, sc, hdc, and dc. It's just where you put them that makes a difference.

The cobweb stitch is on a site called Stitch a Day. They have video demonstrations of each of the stitches. Grab some yarn, a hook, and do it as it's demonstrated. You might be surprised at what you can do.

  12. Cobweb in pink, astro in the other which is my favourite colour of the two :)
