Secret Helper

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if you discovered your "enemy" had been secretly helping you?

I'm not going to specify what sort of enemy nor if the help helped them at all. So many options...

  1. An enemy that really isn’t an enemy … intriguing.

  2. Then they're doing a really poor job of it! It would be kind of of them to care enough.

    1. But they're not taking advantage of the help. Questions there.

  3. Well, I think that is special and I would have to eat some humble pie. Reminds me of Joan Crawford who has been vilified as a Child abuser although many question it today. I have read enough about her to know she was one I would not want to know due to her insecurities and jealous issues plus she has major OCD. All that being said, when she died, it was found that she paid for anyone needing surgery who were too poor to afford it and she paid for their hospital stay. She never told anyone about this.

    1. Some people keep that sort of thing secret. I can kind of understand why.

  4. I am naive enough to think I have no enemies.

  5. That's good way for an enemy to mess with your mind, especially as the enemy leaked that information so you were sure to find out. I'd be suspicious. After all, it's my enemy!

    1. Oh yes, of course the enemy leaked the info. I hadn't considered that...

    2. Great premise, and I would be totally fooled.

  6. The enemy of my enemy is my friend perhaps?

    1. Except it's the enemy doing the helping here. Or is it help?

  7. The old saying "Keep your friend closer and your enemies a lot closer.
Coffee is on and stay safe

  8. I'd be appreciative of the help, but at the same time wondering what's in it for him/her. Wouldn't let my guard down with that one.

  9. I'd be shocked and then humbly apologize for whatever I might've done to them when I thought they were my enemy and also thank them for secretly helping me out.

    1. Who knows? Perhaps it's all part of a nefarious fan.

  10. Helping me with what? An early death? Once an enemy, always an enemy.

  11. I would hope that I could put my feelings aside enough to thank them but at the same time I would wonder why they were helping

  12. That could be interesting, because it might mean the enemy isn't an enemy after all and could be an ally, or they're playing some sneaky long game, lol.

  13. This reminds me of that old adage that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. But your question puts in an interesting twist with the anonymity. My mental wheels are turning. Thanks!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
