Call and Response

On Friday of the prior week, I emailed the sub caller about assignments for the coming week. She offered me the class next door... as a long-term assignment. Sigh.

Ms. S just retired. (If you're wondering about the timing, the district now requires all staff to either be vaccinated or to test once a week. Ms. S chose option number three.) So, while they're looking to hire someone for the position, they need someone to cover the class.

This group is much easier than the class next door.

I'm continuing Ms. S's schedule (why would I start from scratch?), and the class keeps pretty busy. I fear I won't have very many blog-worthy stories to share.

It'll take me some time to catch onto all the intricacies of the group, but one thing I have figured out pretty quickly. Two students have a call and response game going.

Student 1 (out of nowhere): Pizza.

Student 2 (in reply): Sushi.

On my day two in class, we went out bowling and then to pizza after. So, I was puzzled by student 1's repeated "pizza". I mean, we were having pizza. He didn't need to go on and on about it. And then student 2 chimed in with "sushi". Somehow, I got clued in. Now it's just a game I get to watch.

We'll see how long it takes to drive me up a wall.

Because I rarely use real names on the blog, I am going to accept the gift they gave me. From now on, their names here are Pizza and Sushi.

  1. Not having too many blog-worthy stories could be a good problem to have once in a while.

Love the names Pizza and Sushi, though. Looking forward to hearing their continued adventures.

  2. A focus on students actually being students, like in staying on task while in school, might be a nice twist to your blog. It would certainly lift my spirits! :-) I'm thinking that Pizza/Sushi is code for thumbs up/thumb down. Let us know when you figure it out.

    1. It would be an interesting twist, but only in contrast occasionally. It's when they're being difficult that the stories are interesting.

    1. I wish it was a code. Nope. Just out of nowhere he says "pizza!". Sometimes he has to say it a couple times before Sushi hears and responds.

  4. This will be good-don't worry about it! Sometimes, what one person thinks is ordinary, others think is fascinating. Sure is way different from my job.

    1. But I'm sure you really don't want me to go into depth on them filling out a check register, which we spent an hour on today. The lesson went well. I'm not sure what hook I could find to make it an interesting blog post, though.

  5. Yes, I remember nonsensical games well from my time in school. Ah, to be young and carefree.

  6. Well, that teacher is dumb quite frankly. I love what Singapore is doing. They have universal health care and 84% are vaccinated but if anyone who is not vaccinated comes to the hospital and has no proof they will have to pay for the hospital bills. No discussion..brilliant! As for Pizza And Sushi...who knows what goes on in their brains.

    1. I'm sure it began as an argument way back when. Those sorts of in-jokes tend to begin in some ordinary way.

  7. It's nice that they will be a quiet class to make things easier for you, even if it means no blog-worthy stories!

Hope that you are having a good week :)

    1. I wouldn't call them "quiet", but they are way less challenging.

  8. It's like Marco Polo.
If she was in a good place to do it, good for Ms. S for making her own path.

  9. Haha, using their games as names is great. I wonder what started it and what the rules are? But almost guaranteed it will drive you bonkers eventually!

    1. Perhaps that's why he came up with it? I have no idea where this whole thing started, so could be.

  11. Sushi, I don't think any ate it when I was in school.
