Back in April when I was doing that long term eighth grade English class, I had a co-teacher. On Friday, I subbed for her.
I did get a chance to work with Ms. R for the first class of the day. For the last class of the day, I worked with a seventh grade math teacher. The lesson for the day was multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers.
Ms. M (and all the math teachers at the school, really) are great. I wish my math classes had been taught like this. It's very interactive and hands on.
After having gone over the essentials and having given them some time to practice, Ms. M showed a little video to drive the lesson home. It's amazing what's on YouTube.

ReplyDeleteThat's a great video! The lesson is one of the few things I still remember. Math was my weakest subject. Although, I still enjoy long division!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter what grade, all I have to do is say "a negative times a negative is..." and the kiddos know how to respond.

ReplyDeleteMy math teacher managed to teach SOH CAH TOA without that. (That's the guess that's been floated as to the why. It's how to remember sine-cosine-tangent in trig.)
DeleteI hit a big math wall in 6th grade, fell behind and never caught up. Math is still a mystery to me although I can do some basic math. It's from rote memorization though, I still don't understand concepts well. I could have wished for a fun way to learn math.
ReplyDeleteFor me it was 5th grade. Long division. But then in 9th grade I had a great teacher who spoke my language and from there I was back on even footing.

DeleteMath was my least favorite subject. But thank God there are those who love math.

My favorite teachers always injected something fun. :)
