Fashion Icons

On Friday, I was talking to the principal and Mr. T (he teaches social studies and the electives) as the students were leaving for the day. They noticed that Brandon's pants were sagging, and reminded each other that they needed to remind him of the dress code the next time they saw him.

I remarked that I thought the whole sagging thing had gone out of style. (It used to be that we'd have to remind the kiddos to pull up their pants multiple times a day. It's been a few years since that was a major issue.)

The principal explained that yes, that was out of style generally. However, Brandon might have been emulating the look of those just out of jail. Apparently, when they are released, they are frequently given clothes that don't fit, so when the pants are too small, they ride low.

The education I receive when I go to these schools. I learn so much about segments of society I would not normally interact with.

  1. I'm so glad that went out of style, at least for the most part. I guess some kids admire the criminals and think it makes them look cool - idiots!

  2. There’s actually a more sinister explanation for the jailhouse look…the same reason they tell men not to drop the soap when they take a shower,

  3. But snopes disputes my explanation

  4. Is Brandon from a rough neighbourhood where that is a common issue? Hopefully he doesn't emulate the actual crimes criminals do as well...

  5. Being banned will only make them want to do it more.

  8. It seems schools should have more important concerns than playing fashion police. Teenagers have so little control over their own lives, I can hardly blame them for wanting to make choices about their bodies and how to represent them.

    1. I agree! I never supported dress codes, and when my daughter was in high school was ready to fight them when they were considered! As for the pants? Eventually the students will grow older and realize how silly they look! Or, get tired of holding them up when they run!

    2. I don't like looking at their underwear. Dress codes are slippery things. I just thought that we were done with sagging pants.

    3. No, but usually they are plaid and pulled up high! More like shorts, nearly. Oh, if you could see the tops I wore to high school in the early 70s! I graduated in 75. Super short skirts were the norm too. But, one of the tops was really revealing and it was what I was wearing the first time I met my future parents in law! All the girls wore halter tops and halter top dressed. We all did well in school and the boys didn't seem to be distracted in class.

  9. I guess, these are what are also called 'low-waist pants'. I didn't know the prison connection.

  10. This was very interesting for reading. I didn't know that information about pants. Now I also learn something new.

    1. Sagging pants are going out of style, if they haven't already. I'm so happy to see the end of that trend.

  11. I knew about the saggy pants trend but not what it was supposed to copy! I'm glad that kind of thing wasn't around when I was a teenager, haha! Everyone has to wear a school uniform here anyway!

Hope you are having a nice weekend :) I had a fun girly day out shopping yesterday, it was so much fun!

    1. Initially that wasn't what it was emulating. That was the explanation on why someone would still be wearing their pants like that now.

  12. I am so relieved that look is out of style because it was awful. I wonder if any of them will look back at photos and cringe?
