The Return

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if "it" came back?

No, I'm not going to specify what "it" is. I'm feeling vague at the moment, so I'll let your imaginations run wild.

  1. I wouldn't be happy. Merely the three words, "It came back," are ominous to me. Something I'd gotten rid of hasn't stayed away. Sure, I can imagine a child happy his or her lost pet came back (although I'd never call a pet "it). But, that's not what I hear. I hear a disease came back, something like that.

    1. I was hoping for more happy thoughts, but I did leave things unspecified.

  2. Not good news and I suddenly feel itchy. No nothing gutter...I had severe poison ivy back in 1987. My whole body became pink...red...purple and I was so swollen up even my underwear didn't fit. I had to go the the emergency and get an adrenaline shot. My right eye swelled shut. I was hot to the touch and so itchy. Screw the oatmeal bath, all that worked to calm the itch was ice cold water so I literally placed myself in a tub of icy water and laid there for 15 minutes until the itch went away.

  3. I agree with Lisa on this one, and that had to be awful for poor Birgit!

  4. Since I tend to call COVID "it"...well, this gave me chills, and not in a good way. Truthfully, it isn't that it will come back - I don't think it's ever going to leave completely. Another choice for "it" would be chicken pox,as shingles. Up to now I haven't gotten the newer vaccine, both due to cost (Medicare doesn't cover it well)and side effects. I had chicken pox as an adult, though, and it was bad enough.

    1. I had chicken pox at 19. During finals week. Yup, it was not fun.

  5. Boy, that leaves the mind searching. What if shingles came back? That is hell. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

    1. Again? Boho is kind of a rehash of '60s things, isn't it? And there's a discourse in fashion right now about which are the "in" jeans, so any style from the last 50-odd years are up for grabs.

So, if "it" is 60s and 70s fashion, I'd say we're already there.

  8. Ooh, this reminds me of a harmless rash I had several years ago. I looked like a wereleopard with pink rosettes running down my back. lol This just might inspire a short story. Thanks!

  9. "IT", it would all depend on what if IT was good or bad as to how I would except it. If "IT" is the clown in that movie IT then I would not be happy. HAHA....never seen that movie. I love to think of clowns as fun and happy not like that clown.

    1. There's a reason I didn't specify what "it" was.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
