New Acquaintance

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements.
😉

What if someone seemed to know you way better than they should?

  1. I'd think they were someone I must have known in my past and forgotten about! That happened once when a man recognized me from elementary school and "reminded" me he was the one with the Siamese cat! I nodded and pretended I knew them by that! I guess we talked about his cat a lot. It couldn't be anyone stalking me online, I don't "do" social media as far as Facebook etc. so no personal stuff. Barely any info on my blog either. Could my family have told his person about me? Is it a man my age they are trying to fix me up with? HA! Go ahead!

    1. Ah yes, the fix up. Totally plausible, and one I hadn't thought of.

  3. I’d be asking what they were reading? In this day and age of social media, one can learn a lot. I watched a news show where they talked to someone who was very knowledgeable about how to find out about people just from their sites. They were at some beach and asked the people’s names and in 2 minutes he found out so much about them that they all felt uncomfortable. They had no idea how much they told on , well, here. It was very interesting.

  4. Having been extremely paranoid in years past- and still often questioning one's motives in general- I'd probably be suspicious and want to know just how they knew (about) me. For a while I always suspected an ex-wife regarding strange phone calls, strangers walking up to me and striking up conversations, etc. Thankfully, that was eons ago.

  5. I would have to wonder HOW? Did they google me? haha....Probably follows me on FB! lol....I had someone tell me once that I shared to much of myself, my reply was, "oh no I don't, cause if I did you would have prob deleted me a long time ago"!! And seriously, my very personal life I do not share. But as for knowing me better then I know myself, they would have to prove to me that is true and only I would know if what they share is true or not.

    1. No one can know you better than you know yourself.

  6. I would avoid them like the plague. I might even try to discredit them with my friends: "XYZ thinks I ..., can you believe that?" or "I only met XYZ recently, and they already know ... stalker much?" Of course, my friends would be free to make up their own minds. And I'd be free to avoid them if they opted for the presence of this stalker.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
