Contingency Plans

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

Emergencies happen. It's part of the reason I have a job. And that was kind of driven home for me this last week. Which is what gives us today's question...

What if you were in an accident tonight? (I'm going to specify that while you were hurt, you'll eventually fully recover. However, you won't be going anywhere tomorrow.) What would happen to all of your responsibilities tomorrow? (Will they be covered? Will someone be scrambling? Will you have some stress trying to get things taken care of?)

  1. I'm the only one who does what I do at work, so they'd be hurting after about a week. Online, I have a great group of admins who would cover the IWSG. I'd just kick back and watch a lot of movies.

  2. waw...I wish nothing happen to me tonight.
Great question for "short story"-length answer.

  3. Yep, after I notified my boss, my responsibilities would be covered as I'm just "one" in a "pool" of many. It could be challenging though if it involved the time that I'm committed to watching the grandson due to parents' work obligations. That they would be scrambling around to make other alternatives.

  4. Well, that's something I don't want to contemplate! I see a lot of people in a day, so either my husband or I would have to make a lot of phone calls to cancel my engagements. He'd also have to handle all of the kids' appointments. It wouldn't be fun!

  5. My work would be crying since they'd have to figure out how to cut the checks and all that jazz hahaha

  6. It would be a scramble for sure at work but somehow it would be taken care of. I would just feel bad for the girl I work with since the other is off for 2 wks (Her father just passed away this morning). I can say we are scrambling now but things are covered and i would be sitting back reading and watching movies

  7. Actually, I don't really have anything going on tomorrow. And in general, I don't think I'd have to scramble much, but I can be bad at anticipating things.

  8. If I had my way, I would never leave the house. We have 4 licenced drivers here. My husband takes care of all the bills. Sadly, it would make very little difference in this world if I was laid up for a long time. A year ago I had 2 foot surgeries (joint removal) and we all did fine. The one big thing was when we went to our cabin. Because I didn't do the packing we left home for a week with no meat or butter. Now that was a crisis! My husband has terminal cancer, so he has made what he calls a "Tip File" for when he tips over. It has everything in it form where to mail the bills to when to rotate the tires. It is a real work of love.

    1. It's great that you don't have to do all the driving. I think more of us need to create "tip files" for the unexpected.

  9. We've gone though something almost like the past two years. First him, then me. Since we're both low maintenance it went smoothly. Not too many temper tantrums from me.

  10. At work, we are cross trained; I would be covered. At home - it would create stress for my husband, who already has enough stress in his life with a mother possibly in her last weeks of life.

  11. I would probably be stressed since I have client edits to finish and have a deadline. lol

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
