Blame It On the Heat

The jellyfish are coming along...

I don't have a complete jellyfish at the moment. But these pieces will go into the four that are in process.

I could be totally done with them except: (1) It's been warm, so I haven't been doing as much yarny stuff as I would do when it's cold, (2) I've been working many days (which is such a shock as I don't usually get so many summer school days, but I'm so very, very grateful for the work), and (3) It turns out that the heat is making me stupid.

How is the heat making me stupid? The other night I thought it'd be fun to do some different color combinations of the flip-flop keychains. I needed a bit of a break from the jellyfish. And while one came out really nice...

...I managed to make stupid mistakes on the other two. This one in orange and purple...

...is for me, so I'm making myself live with the mistake. Can you see it?

As for the other...

...I was going to put it up for sale, but I can't sell this. Can you see the mistake? How about here?

Yeah, so I'm going to have to remake this. Ah well.

I did manage to list a couple more lip balm cozy colors. (If you click on the pictures, it'll take you to the listings on Etsy.)

Keyfob Lip Balm Cozy in Yellow

Keyfob Lip Balm Cozy in Orange

As I was doing some research, I saw lip balm cozies with mermaid tails on them. What do you think? Should I attempt such a thing?

  1. Okay, I may be a little dense, but I don't see the mistake in the flip flop key chain. I'd still sell it, mark it down a bit, put it in a bin with "imperfections" or something like that and say 30% off or something like that. It could sell.

  2. Dang! Can't see the mistake!

It has been stinkin' hot here in Murrieta/Temecula area. 90-100 deg.+. Dry and ready to have a wildfire is on the horizon.

    Love your knitting prowess.

    1. Thanks.

      For the record, the mistakes:
      1. Orange/purple: the ends of the "shoelace" are uneven.
      2. Blue/black: the "toe" part of the "shoelace" is twisted. That is, I accidentally flipped it upside down when tying down the ends.

  3. Hi Liz - love the jellies ... and I also don't see the mistake - probably would if I could hold one ... love the pretty colours of the first one. Cheers Hilary

    1. I might be making too much of it. They seem glaring to me.

  5. The Jelly fish will look great but i totally understand about the heat. It is stupid here as well. We have had temps of 35C not including the humidity which makes one feel like it is 42C...something like 105F. As for the flip flops..love all the colour combos and i don't see the mistake at all.

    1. Yeah, we've had similar issues with humidity (which we're not used to, so we get very cranky about it). The joys of summer...

  6. I couldn't see the mistakes, either, even after I saw the comment detailing them, but I defer to your judgment. I think the mermaid tail cozies could be really cute.

And I've been saying that the Florida heat has been melting my brain since I got here, so I am with you on that whole heat-making-you-stupid feeling.

  7. Even with the mistakes, they still look good. The first one is a really pretty color.

  8. The thong keychain is cute. All of your stuff is fun. I can't spot mistakes either.

What's it been down there, heat-wise? 100F? Crazy stuff.

    1. I'm closer to the coast, so only that really hot week did we get over 100F. I'm so glad I don't live more inland. Ick.

  9. Heat is the worst. And the humidity! I wouldn't want to work with yarn either. Just looking at it makes me hot (in spite of how much I love those jellyfish).

  10. I like the pink and green flip flop. I think you should go for the mermaid tails. They seem to be super popular right now, so they might sell well.

    1. Thanks. I hadn't really noticed the mermaid tail trend.

  11. I saw mistakes, but, then again, I've been crocheting for almost 50 years. I've made more than my share of mistakes in 50 years, and I haven't crocheted for cash in many a year - so, nowadays, I just say "who cares" and carry on (unless it's a gift). Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I wouldn't have been so concerned if it wasn't something I had intended to sell. Not anymore.

  12. Is this where I chime in and say it was -7.7'C (about 18'F) last night to 10'C (50'F) in the day? Of course, I'm ready for heat. Swap?

I think when you are the owner of the mistake it stands out like a sore thumb, but no-one else will notice. Like everyone else, I can't see what the problem is.

  13. I don't see the mistakes either, bet you could still sell them!! They all turned out adorable!

    1. I probably could, but I won't. I'm too much of a perfectionist for that. I mean, if someone could touch it and say it looked okay, then that would be fine. But not online.

  14. I can't see the mistakes either. You know best. :-)

  15. I can't see any mistakes... but the ones you claim have mistakes don't seem to sit as evenly as the other. Almost a warp? Which makes me think... do you ever read the blog "Rubber Shoes in Hell"? Maybe there is an actual market for slightly twisted looking flip-flops. Twist them even further and it will surely look intentional!

    1. I've never seen that blog. And I know some people wouldn't mind the imperfection. I'm all for deliberate mistakes when that's the look I'm going for. It does give it a rough-hewn hand crafted look.

  16. I don't see the mistakes except maybe a warp as Red mentions. The mermaid tails sound like fun, and I bet you'd make them look great. ~nods~ I'm so glad you're getting desired work this summer. By the way, getting overheated makes me dopey, especially after I lift weights. It's a good thing operating a car is such an ingrained motor function!

    1. I tried the mermaid tail last night. It's totally doable. It may be on the blog next week if I can't finish up what I'm working on today.

  17. I don't see the mistakes, but that's how it is with stuff I haven't made. I see all of my mistakes in my own projects all the time and it bugs me. LOL

    1. I would have ripped it out except I had tied everything down by then. Sigh. I will rip out and redo so many things because I know it'll drive me batty if I don't.
