Perilous Rain
Rain had been forecast for this day for a full week. The sky was cloudy that morning. I saw girls walking around with umbrellas.
In other words, rain was expected. So, when water started falling from the sky that afternoon, no one should have been surprised.
But I was with 7th graders.
It was the end of the day. The bell rang, dismissing them. They hovered at the door, watching it rain. Hesitant.
But eventually end of day won out, and they exited the classroom. Well, most of them. A couple continued to stand at the open door.
"I can't go out there. I can't get my hair wet."
She explained that her hair would get frizzy. Um...
"You can't stay here until the rain stops," I replied. (It rained pretty much continuously, if lightly, from the time I left the classroom until after I got home. I was not about to wait out the rain.)
So, she braced herself and braved the rain. I have no idea how her hair fared.

Oh dear .. if it was a Friday I bet the whole weekend was about the frizz and rain ... mind you I could do with some hair!! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteIntroduce that young lady to Frizz-ease.
ReplyDeleteGood idea.
DeleteThat is one original excuse! I hated rainy days in elementary school. No recess. Lunch eaten in the room. No bathroom breaks for teachers, until the asst. principal made it down to rooms.
ReplyDeleteHand her an old grocery bag (not the 10 cent kind) for her hair. What is worse: frizz or an Albertson bag on your head?
Too bad I didn't have a bag for her to use. (Although, there was one rainy day where a girl put Target bags over her shoes to keep them from getting wet/dirty.)
DeleteIt always irritates me when people block doorways during rain. It's rain, it's probably not going to kill you. Maybe that's the one good thing about straight, flat hair; no amount of rain or humidity will make my hair frizzy.
ReplyDeleteOh, so true. They'll hover there, and I have to get on their case to just move.
DeleteI don't have to worry about the rain 'coz I'm like the bald eagle style, haha - Theres a photo up on my SpacerG+ if you've all day to search thousands of images. I look bald but am I?
ReplyDeleteYou don't know what it's like when your hair explodes and nothing you can do will hold it down! I look like a brown dandelion!!!
ReplyDeleteHAHA....to funny! I have never cared about the hair in rain. It's hair, it dries! I don't like umbrellas or keeping up with them. But teenage girls can be so silly.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was the end of the day. She could go home.
DeleteIts Southern California so I get this why they would be hesitate of rain :)
ReplyDeletebetty
hesitant I mean :)
DeleteGuess I'm alone in thinking that rain won't melt me. And, with short, straight hair, no worries about frizz. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteNah. If I didn't think she was being ridiculous, it wouldn't have made the blog.
Delete'I'm melting...." Yeah. I used to think I was made of sugar, too. As for the hair, I've given in to the Ottawa tribal stick straightness after enforcing the Irish curls with too many perms in the eighties.
ReplyDeleteHer hair was actually straight. So, I'm not sure what she was so worried about.
DeleteIt makes me think of Wal-Mart or church with all these ladies waiting for their husbands to bring the cars around on rainy days, and I'll just weave my way through them and out to my car.
ReplyDeleteAnd she's way too young to be that precious about her hair.
DeleteI have to laugh at this. When we were young, we cared so much about our hair and our make up, making sure everything was just right. When we entered our 30's we made sure our hair looked good and make up was good . In our 40's we comb our hair and put on some lipstick but it keeps going down from there...hahahaaaa
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in my 20s I stopped wearing makeup altogether. Only started back up when I was in my 30s.
DeleteWhen I was young, my hair was perfectly straight and I envied those with curls. Now, for some reason, my hair curls up like little pig's tails in high humidity and I love that.
ReplyDeleteA is for Apollo 11 moon landing: Was it real?
LOL end of day would have totally won out for me.
ReplyDeleteKids are so precious and vain sometimes. I blame the media and the high ideals they set. Mind you I was very self-conscious at that age too back in the old days when there was hardly any media.
ReplyDeleteIt's the age. They are so particular. Well, not that that really ever goes away...
DeleteArgh. Like the girl, I can't stand for my hair to get wet. It frizzes up to the point in which I look like a clown. Of course, gotta' be honest, end of day probably would have won out in this particular case. Not even my hair would keep me in the classroom one second longer than necessary.
ReplyDeleteMy issue was with her not coming to school prepared, then. We knew it was going to rain.
