I'd had trouble with them all period. I made reasonable requests ("Get to work"; "Turn off YouTube"; "Stop mocking your classmate") that they ignored.
6th periods can be interesting. These 11th graders were downright rude.
So, I wasn't terribly shocked when at the end of the period, as they were getting packed up, they all burst into song...
It was an odd selection, but the majority of the class joined in. They stumbled over the lyrics. Does anyone know if this song has been in some movie or TV show? Because, why this one came up...
Some days I use my note to the teacher to vent. (And bonus, I received a packet of apology notes about a week later. So, my venting was heard.)
It was in an old movie from years ago. Road Trip or something like that when there people trying to compete in some type of contest for something. Big help I know. But nothing recent that I know of. Kinda of catchy song though!

Hi Liz - glad someone knows! But success for you ... well done - let's see what happens at the next session ... cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteIt was in the first Shrek. From their ages, that's probably where they first heard it.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what kids know....when my younger daughter was a teenager, I enrolled her in a summer travel camp. the counselor introduced them to music from the 1980's, before any of them were born. they spent the summer singing those songs.
ReplyDeleteI had a girl in class on Tuesday wearing a Def Leppard t-shirt. It's all still out there.
DeleteIt's a pretty big meme on Tumblr. The lyrics to it are pasted in weird places, though usually just the first half dozen words. I saw one where the entire song was turned into a Star Wars crawl.
ReplyDeleteAs a mom of two and grandma of 3 let me just throw this out there.....SOMETIMES you just wish you could knock them in the head!
ReplyDeleteI know, right?
DeleteThis sounds like you went through a horrible class and I went through a couple of horrible people..one was 45 minutes late! I can't play the song but I bet it's either the one from Shrek which is a remake of the Monkees hit or the one from Rat Race
ReplyDeleteIt's not a Monkees cover. It was one of their original songs. (And isn't the Monkees cover a cover of Neil Diamond, anyway?)
DeleteLOL what a random song for them to pick.
ReplyDelete11th grade rude. Usual the junior and senior is starting to get there act together. Knowing they will be facing the world soon.
ReplyDeleteYup. Usually I can count on the juniors and seniors to be reasonable individuals. Not every time, though, sadly.
DeleteSorry. I don't know anything by Smash Mouth. Glad the teacher had your back on this class.
ReplyDeleteI remember this featured in "Shrek". Would these kids know such an old movie? I really like the tune, at any rate.
ReplyDelete"Old" movie? Yikes. It came out in 2001. They would have been 1. Then with DVDs and TV, it could have been ubiquitous for them while they were in kindergarten through 3rd grade or so.
DeleteYikes is right. I don't feel old, but then I think of something that makes me stop in my tracks. That's a good point about DVDs and TV. They were raised on a steady diet. I still refuse to own more than one television and keep it out of the bedroom. ~grin~ Be well!
DeleteI'm sure it isn't easy being a sub. Or a teacher for that matter!
ReplyDeleteSome days are easier than others.
DeleteThis song was one of the ones on my soundtrack to my first year at Uni. I only had four CDs in my room in Halls of Residence for most of that time; two Enya CDs and the first two Shrek soundtracks. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo that brings back memories.
DeleteAt least it's better than that silly "This is a pen, this is an apple, this is a penapple" rubbish thing that's going around. Do you have to put up with that in the US? Remember, "What does the fox say?" Gah!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard that one. I'm rather glad of that.
DeleteA 'packet of apologies' is nice, but a bouquet of flowers is better. :)
ReplyDeleteNah, the packet of apologies was entertaining. Flowers die.
