A Super Accessory

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

Last week in a government class (full of seniors), I noticed a girl... Nah, I thought. Then I took a closer look. Yup. She was wearing a cape with a Batman logo on the back.

A. Cape.

To. School.

She's at least 17 (if not 18 already).

My next thought was...

What if we all wore capes, as in, capes were a normal, everyday accessory?

  1. One of the kids I watch (15 yo) has these socks that have little capes on the back of them. They are pretty funny. And he wears a superman shirt.

    Anyway, I digress.

Didn't we all learn from the Incredibles that wearing capes is a bad idea?

  2. Got to give her credit for wearing such a cape; wonder how much teasing she got. I saw a family in the grocery store awhile back. Two young children under 7 years of age. Parents and children were wearing capes of super heroes. I admired the parents for going along with the kids.

It would be interesting if we wore capes as normal daily accessories. I would imagine I'd be a bit clumsy in them though.

  3. We'd all be superheroes!
Hey, at that age, she can still get away with it. As adults, we'd be weirdos.

  4. HA....I could do the cape thing in the winter for sure since I never wear a coat but with a LOGO, not thinking at 57 I could get away with that....haha...unless someone looks at me and says, "Well, Pam is just getting more and more strange"!!

    1. I guess it just depends on your neighbors. If you live near a bunch of cosplayers...

  5. I have a fancy black and red cape with a hood that I would totally wear instead of the winter coat.

  6. My cape would be a Hogwarts cape, either Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Forgive spelling. Really, though, I would like a cape like Snape's cape. That my favorite.

    1. Have you been on Pottermore? There's a sorting hat app at the beginning. (Although, I don't recommend it. I was sorted into Slytherin. Then I redid and got sorted into... I think it was Ravenclaw. Much better.)

  7. Never say never! Who would have guessed that wearing pajamas outside would be considered ok and now Walmart freaks wear them everywhere. I was in providence RI once and I saw a man with a red cape on....he also had Doc martin boots and a tiny red thong bikini on...yup, that was different

    1. Yikes! They have pajama days at school. One of their favorite dress up days.

  8. I know people who did that in high school. And college. Hell, I'd do it now if I had one. I would probably also go for Batman.

I think the real question should be why we aren't doing this already.

  9. Well, there must only be so many superheroes and types of cape, so we would all divide into cape factions. It would quickly escalate into a capist society!

  10. Well, back in the day, people did wear capes; they were called cloaks but acted in the same manner. I would want one that had a hood and would keep me warm in the winter. Perhaps it would be a magical cloak (the best kind).

  11. Well, I always wanted to be Batman when I was a little girl and I would love a cape like the men used to wear back in the day of dashing gents.

  12. Hi Liz - we had capes at school, rather than coats ... perhaps we had coats too - but it was uniform ... and Batman hadn't come about by then! Interesting though .. cheers Hilary

  13. I could imagine the cape getting stuck in an elevator door. But I think you've just created a fashion trend. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  14. I think it's great that she did that! Maybe she felt empowered. If everyone did it, it wouldn't be as special. :)

  15. I wear an invisible cape! I know that I am WONDERWOMAN!!
