Stooped

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

What if all of our doorways were shorter? That is, what if every entrance to every room was low enough so that we all had to duck to enter?

  1. It would be good exercise.

  2. I'd be in Hobbitville! Actually, I was in a very old hotel in Italy once and at every single door my husband would have hit his forehead if hadn't ducked. They were all about 5 feet high, and even I had to dip my head. Were people really all that short?

    1. I think so. At least, that's what they tell us.

  3. :( I would be sad.

At least I'm short! But if the doorway is so short that I have to duck (I'm 5'2"), I feel bad for people that are way taller than me!

    1. I'm positing a world in which you too would have to duck into every room.

  4. I think I would be hitting my head a lot :) I would hope there would be signs warning of "low ceiling ahead" or something like that. I guess too this would be the one time being short could be an advantage :)

  5. Yeah, I'd hit my head. My wife would probably fit though.

  6. They would have to be considerably shorter before I would worry about hitting my head...lol.

  7. I guess I'd find out what it's like to be my best friend's height (~ 6'6"). He was too tall to stand up in the kitchen of my last apartment...

  8. Well I would feel like i am back in 1356 when most people were quite short. We would get used to it especially after a few knocks in the head

  9. It depends on how short you mean. Because something that's short for most people is going to be just the right size for me. Everyone else might be ducking to enter but I could still go in easily!

  10. I'd more than likely not pay attention and smack my head quite a bit lol

  11. I'd be fine. I'm only 5'2" - unless the doorways were kid sized, then I'd be banging my head like everyone else.

  12. I'd be bothered. I'm not too tall (5'8"), but sometimes I bonk my head on things just above me (bus stop straps, funky bits sticking out on trains) & it bugs me because I can never seem to remember to simply swivel my head one way or the other to avoid the bonking.

    1. Yea, we're at about the right height for things like that.

  13. I went to Shakespeare's house in Stratford upon Avon and all the doorways were very short. The beds were all short too. People have grown taller over the last few centuries. Better nutrition I suppose.

    1. I think that's one of the theories I've heard as well.

  14. Sean is 6'7 so he basically already does.
I mean, if it was all we knew, we'd just deal.
It's the random ones that take us by surprise that screw us over.

  15. I have a bad back. It would be painful after a while. I'm also known for hitting my head. Ouch! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I can sympathize with the bad back. It would get painful for some.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
