On Repeat

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

I'm not sure why I thought of this right now, but you know the Groundhog Day episode? Most sci-fi shows that last more than a couple seasons have one. Star Trek had at least one. Personally, I think Stargate: SG1 hit it out of the park in theirs. And I'm sure you can give me many other examples in the comments.

But it seems like they always focus on the one person who knows they're in a time loop. So...

What if you got stuck in a time loop, but didn't know it? Would those that were aware of the problem be able to convince you that today is continuing to repeat over and over and over again?

Also, this is my week at Unicorn Bell. I'd love it if you'd stop by. I'm talking about social media marketing.

  1. I would just hope there would be lots of chocolate involved :) Probably would take some convincing though to let me know that I was in such a loop. Were you affected with the LASD closures today? Scary!!!

    1. I heard about the LAUSD closures while driving to work today. But nope, we're open. So far, so good.

  2. I hope I was having a great day! It would be harder for them to convince me. I have to admit I am the type that I am not a flexible as I like to think. My first thing I say is "no". I try to change it but it is a part of who I am

  3. Yes, if it was a great day I wouldn't mind a repeat.

    1. But you wouldn't remember that you were repeating it.

  4. I don't think that others would be able to convince me a day was on repeat if I wasn't experiencing it for myself, although I guess perfect foreknowledge of the future might give me something to think about. I might be too hard-headed to accept it, though.

  5. I don't think I would want my days to be repeated. Oh wait, I think I already do the same thing over and over! LOL

    1. But you wouldn't realize that it was repeating. Not unless someone told you and you believed them.

  6. I heard about the LAUSD closures at lunch (we are three hours ahead of you) we were all talking about it at work. If I was stuck in that loop, I doubt I would believe anyone. I can be quite stubborn. And my nickname is "Always Right". Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  7. Thinking on this I'm wondering if anyone would be aware of being in a time loop. And could anything actually ever change? At least without creating diverging alternate time lines.

I'd better stop there as I could get carried away with this idea.

    1. Well, that's the thing. In every TV show or movie, there's someone who is aware. Otherwise, who could stop it?

  8. I've seen that movie so many times it feels like Groundhog Day. I'd eat all the naughty foods and drink French champagne knowing I wouldn't wake up with a hangover plus I'd ring all the annoying people and tell them what I thought of them. Well that would be the first day anyway.Bring it on!

  9. If you didn't know, I wouldn't tell you. Seems mean.

    1. But you don't know. I know, and I'm trying to convince you.

  10. I'd go crazy if I was stuck in a loop. I'd definitely want to figure out as quickly as possible how to get out!

I'll stop by your guest post.

    1. Well, yeah. But you don't know it. To you, it's the first time you've experienced the day.

  11. Liz, as a SAHM that's precisely how I felt. Every day pretty much the same as the day before. Some days so close to others that I'd swear I was having deja vu. I always thought it kinda cool to have a groundhog dog, especially if I was the one who realized what was going on and then could control the outcome like Bill Murry in Groundhog Day. That's a hilarious movie. However, it would get tiresome and I would want to break the cycle...eventually. BUT, if I didn't know and it was up to someone else to convince me then I'd think, "Ok buster you're one fruit loop!" Cool question!

  12. I am pretty pragmatic, but if the person in the know could give a little evidence of the groundhog I might believe it..Stranger things and all that.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
