Glitchy Portal

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

What if you found a portal to a different world? What if the person you told didn't believe you? What if you then tried to prove it, but it wouldn't work? But it worked when they left?

  1. Then I'd say heck with them and go off to explore. With a sword and a bat, of course. Always be prepared.

  2. I'm with Alex-I'd think "Smell ya later" to my friend and I would make sure to bring a bat and mace but some water and food and go off to explore

  3. I am not an adventurer!! If I found a portal to another world there is no way I would explore it! I don't think I would even tell anyone about it. Unless, of course, it would be Darian. He would want to explore another world. Then I'd wait for him to come back and tell me about it. But, of course, I'd worry myself sick while he was gone.

    1. I'd need the friend to go with me, I think.

  4. I wouldn't bother telling my friend, again, or she'd think I'm crazy. I'm not sure that I'd go off and explore it myself, though. Too risky.

    1. Lots of explorers in the comments section today.

  6. I would be so ticked that I couldn't prove that it worked to others. I'd kind of like to see the other world, but I'd be worried about getting trapped in some horrible place, like the year 2011...

  7. I'd see if I could take pictures of it to share with that person who didn't believe me :)

    1. On the other side? Because the portal already didn't work for the friend.

  8. Haha! I've written a series about a portal that leads to a different world. :P

  9. That would be interesting to do provided I could get back to this world, otherwise I'd be awfully hesitant to cross that line. But, IF I did cross that line then I think I would trend carefully with telling someone in the other world that I didn't belong there or else I might find myself in a mental institution assuming they had such things. Maybe in the other world everyone is crazy anyhow and can't really wrap their minds around what I'm saying. That would be my kind of luck entering a new world. Cool questions!

  10. Then I would laugh, and go have an epic adventure between me and my portal. I mean, who needs to be believed?

  11. I would totally swan dive into that thing. :)

  12. I'm running as far as possible from that portal!

  13. Sounds a bit like Lucy in Narnia! If it was a nice world I'd just hop back into it when I needed a break from this world :)

  14. I'm with Pinky - I thought of Lucy and I thought . . . you know, my own private portal to another land? That might be nice. Of course, it might also be dangerous, too. If my family couldn't come with me, I don't think I would go . . . however, what if a character felt they had nothing to lose? Or, what if they just didn't think about those they were leaving behind? What if they got trapped on the other side? What if . . . well, I'm thinking now. :)

  15. Sounds like a great middle-grade fantasy adventure series!

  16. I think I'd be too chicken to go through it. What if I got stuck in another world and couldn't get back to my family?! That would be scary... But maybe someday, when I'm old and I've lived a full life, I'd want to explore it. :)

    1. I think I'd be too chicken, too. But many in these comments wouldn't be.

  17. I wouldn't want to go exploring at this point in my life, despite my love of writing science fiction. I would write a secret book about my discovery and leave it in my will to my son. Then he could explore, write his own book, and use my book as the preface. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. It's interesting who wants to go exploring versus who doesn't.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
