Planning a Tattoo

"I'm about to get my tattoo. I'm going to get my mom's name."

I usually don't engage the students on the topic of tattoos. But this statement was directed at the student teacher, and he was more than happy to question why the student would need his mother's name on his arm.

"Do you think you're going to forget it?" the student teacher asked.

The student explained it was his mom, the most important woman in his life, the woman who gave him life, and so he should honor her.

"But she's going to be so mad."

That's when it came out that his mother wasn't keen on the idea of her teen son getting a tattoo.

The student teacher then questioned the boy on his age. Wasn't he 17? Yeah, he was getting the tattoo for his 17th birthday.

Then how was he getting permission to get the tattoo?

Turns out, his father was giving him his official permission. (A signature is required somewhere, I'm sure.)

"So... For your first tattoo, you're going to get the name of the person who does not want you to get a tattoo?"

It's nice to have another adult in the room, especially when he says the things I'm thinking.

Ah, teens.

  1. This had me laughing. How funny! Wouldn't want to be in that household after he gets the tattoo without his mom's knowledge. Of course he an wait one more year until he's 18 and then be able to get it without anyone's permission but himself.

  6. It's clearly something important to him. I guess he thinks it's a big deal for it to be his mom's name, even though she's probably going to be mad about it. At least he was smart enough not to get a girlfriend's name tattooed on.

  7. Shaking my head, but perhaps I would be secretly pleased. Maybe. I certainly would have been a bit angry at my son's father.

  8. I got a tattoo of a small rose on my shoulder when I was 18. I liked it a lot for about 5 years. Now, I regret it. It would be nice to not get freaked out when I glance it in the mirror. I always forget about it and thing it's a spider.

  9. I mean. It's his body so do what he wants. And mom, kid, pets are the only names you're supposed to do, right? lol

  12. I started considering a tattoo for the first time while I was in college. I knew what I wanted and where I wanted it, but tattoos are not cheap trinkets, and I was a poor college student, so I decided I would wait a year, try saving some money, and if I still felt strongly about that tattoo in that spot, I'd do it.
I never did get that tattoo, but I've considered others.

    1. I think that should be the rule for tattoos, especially for teens.

  13. Maybe he thinks if he gets his Mum's name she won' tbe able to flip out as much as he knows she will. He was probably testing the line on the student teacher - "most important woman in my life..." Wonder if it will work?

  14. haha....I have said it on your blog before and I will say it yet again.....KIDS! My dad was in the Navy so of course he had tats. I was never a big fan of them myself but to each their own....however over the yrs I have thought about getting one...JUST ONE. I designed one for Fibro and I wanted to get that but then I read that if you have it, getting a tat is not a good choice! haha...so as of yet, I do not have. My son, being in the Navy, has several and my daughter has 3 I think. As I have aged I feel that tats are just another way of being yourself, showing your personality although and I hope I do not offend cause this is just my thoughts....I don't care for women being covered in tats. A small one here or there is different. I once thought when I was younger that I would get a bouquet of red roses right above my breast, but I figured that as I aged that simple bouquet of roses would become a bouquet of long stem red roses as my breast went south! :)

    1. I'm very much of the "it's your body" side. I won't get one, but I don't much care if someone else chooses to.

  16. Good one!
When my son said he wanted a tattoo, both my wife and I were not in favour of it. He is grown up now, still he hasn't one. Probably, the craze has worn off.
I have always wondered, getting one is not a big deal. But if later on in life, if you want to get rid of it, is that easy?

    1. From what I understand, it is not. But try telling the kiddos that they won't love that thing in ten years. They just don't get it yet.
