God Friended Me

The schools have the week off, so I'll return with last week's subbing stories next week. Today, it's another edition of "Under the Radar TV Shows". That is, a TV show that isn't getting a lot of attention.

This time, I'm here to tell you about God Friended Me.

If you're like me, you probably rolled your eyes when you saw this in the fall lineup. The title? The premise? Really?

In case you didn't hear about it, the show is about a Millennial who gets a friend request from God on Facebook. (A Millennial on Facebook? Already, my suspension of disbelief is strained.) And then he's given friend suggestions. These friend suggestions turn out to be people who need help...

But here's the thing. It's really well done. It's on Sunday nights (on CBS), and it's a very nice show. I mean nice in a good way.

Miles (the Millennial) is an atheist and son of a minister. He has a podcast called The Millennial Prophet where he rails against religion. And he's dubious about the whole God thing. He resists the friending and the helping until he kind of gets into it.

In fact, Miles recruited his friend to hack into the God account and figure out who's behind it. Finding this person or people is proving to be way harder than they expected.

It's a nice show with the whole helping people thing, but the stories aren't as straightforward as you'd expect. It's a very retro premise, but they don't conclude the stories in that retro way. A woman comes to New York to find "the love of her life", but it turns out that the guy is gay. It's still a nice reunion between two old friends. (They'd met at a summer camp when they were kids.)

If you're not watching, you should give it a try. Just one episode. Right now, it's nice to have a nice show. It's a great balance to some of the other darker shows out there. (Because if you want dark, I could tell you all about YOU...)

And let me know if you're watching it, too. I hope I'm not the only one.

  1. Does he start to believe in God? That would be great.

  2. I'm with you. Miles is personable and other actors are okay. But, really?

  3. Sounds interesting. ~nods~ Thank you for sharing, though I don't know if it's available via our Roku.

    1. It's on CBS, and CBS had their CBS All Access, so you can probably access it.

  4. It's showing on tv here at the moment and I'd been of two minds, but from your rec I'll give it a shot.

No idea if you guys have this but we have catch-up tv here - all the tv stations (we have 5 free-to-air organisations, although they all have multiple channels) have an app where they hold the content for 4 weeks (or longer depending on how it is licensed, but most US shows have 4 weeks). I just checked and the first 3 eps are on the app.

  6. I think I'm down to only one show that's on network television. It's been years since something impressed me.

  7. I've seen the ads and it does look interesting, but I'm not in control of the remote here, so unless it comes on Netflix down the road or hubby is out of town, I'm probably not going to see it though I would want to see it. (I'm okay with hubby being in control of the remote, gives me more time on the computer :)

  8. I saw about 10 minutes of it this past Sunday, enough to impress me - but, it was up against husband's Sunday Night Football so guess what won. I am going to see if my cable company's On Demand has any of the episodes. You're right; it isn't at all what I thought it would be like.

    1. It should be OnDemand. If not, try CBS's streaming service.

  9. I have been meaning to give this a try despite the title. I am all for some niceness on tv. I don't care to see another serial killer helping out cops, backstabbing jerks..ok enough about Trump, zombies..yeah...sorry, I know, enough about Trump. :) I will try this show and hope I don't need the former episodes

  11. I love dark, but it's also nice to watch something that isn't. Thank you for this suggestion, it sounds interesting and I'm adding it to my list. Love the premise! An atheist gets a friend request from God. Ha!

  12. That sounds like an interesting show. It sounds like it'd be a good mix of heartwarming, seriousness, and humor.

  13. I haven’t had the chance to watch it, but it sounds similar to two of favorites, Highway to Heaven and Touched By An Angel.

    1. Similar, but in both of those, the angels believed. Miles doesn't. But, the helping people angle is similar.

  14. Anything is better than the constant stream of rubbishy reality shows huh? I've seen the promos for this show but haven't watched it yet. We are currently binging on English detective shows. I'll give this a go on your advice though ;)

    1. It's a different sort than English detective shows.

  15. Okay, Liz, I'll give the show a try. The clips show it as being saccharine, so we've skipped it. Your review makes it sound quite interesting.
