All Over the Place

It was the penultimate week of school...

(Keep in mind that my posts generally appear the week after the week in which they occurred. And I only do subbing stories Wednesday through Friday, so I'm cherry-picking the most blog-worthy events.)

(Yes, this is still late, comparatively. But in my part of the country, this was normal. I say "was" because next year we're joining you all. Our first day of school for the 2018-19 school year is August 20th. Which is way early for us. I guarantee whining will occur, especially with our shortened summer this year.)

...and I was kind of all over the place. Three days of middle school. Two days "roving" (well, one actual roving day and one that turned into a roving day). One day with a severe special ed class. Well, one and a half. The roving day had a couple of those classes as well.

Yet, I've been struggling to come up with blog posts.

I could tell you about Monday's severe special ed. class. But the most interesting thing about that day was how badly sunburned one of the instructional aides had gotten over the weekend. (It's a long story about him working on a historical ship.)

Tuesday had one awful period (out of five). Awful, as in I had to keep them from talking over the movie. Yup, a video day. What's more boring than writing about a video day? Working one.

Wednesday was one of my roving days. And I was able to pull a story out of it. You'll see that one tomorrow.

Thursday I covered a teacher who works in three different classrooms. And since I covered an extra period in the time between the two classes in the same room, I spent the whole day travelling. It's not as bad as it sounds. Alas, the drama class had little drama. The leadership class did as they were told. And the ELD classes... Well, I'll have a story from them on Friday.

And finally, Friday I had a lovely day with well-behaved seventh graders preparing for their finals. Seriously, they were actually working. And asking questions. That were relevant. There was one period with two students, but that was because the eighth graders were on their end-of-the-year excursion to Knott's Berry Farm.

Some weeks finding things to write about is hard.

Happy birthday to my niece, Olivia. She's 17 today. I will ask her what she wants me to make for her at some point today. What do you think she should ask for?

  1. I have been having a difficult time digging up subjects to write about as well at the moment.

The diligent 7th graders sound like they were a treat!

    1. They were lovely. Even the kiddos who kept apologizing for "bothering" me by asking me questions.

  2. Watch her ask for a jellyfish.
Must be nice to go to a theme park instead of school.

    1. Her brothers all have one, so why not her too?

  3. I think if your niece drove, she would want one of those flip-flop key chains. Happy birthday to her! Wow, I am so surprised that the school is going to start early in August! That is definitely a first and you are right, there will be lots of whining with how short summer was this year from all involved, students, teachers, parents, etc.

    1. She does drive :)
Since the rest of the country has gone with the earlier start date, it was just a matter of time before we followed suit. Since the matter was put up to the teachers for a vote, I think fewer teachers will complain. (And all the neighboring districts are doing something similar this year.)

  4. I was thinking of the jellyfish too. :) They are adorable.

I had a tough time with topics this morning. I wanted to post about the costume I made, but didn't have pictures. Then I wanted to post about my drawing, but left it at home so couldn't get a digital version of it. *sigh* I should've posted about my obsession with The Greatest Showman!

    1. That would work. I can't wait to see pictures of your costume :)

  5. Hi Liz .. I think she should ask for a fluther of jellyfish ... that'll keep you busy ... but your days sound kind of chaotic a lot of the time - but you're teaching and that's good - cheers Hilary

    1. I like to have things change up all the time. It's what I like about subbing.

That's three for a jellyfish. We'll see what she asks for.

  6. I would be whining and upset big time if I had to go back to school on Aug 20th. I recall my mom telling me they went back to school around that time and only had 2 or 3 weeks off. I was dumbfounded and happy that I was in Canada. Glad those Grade 7`s were well behaved. I can see her ask for a jellyfish..now what colour

    1. Only 2 or 3 weeks off? Really? We've had summers off since my parents were in school, at least. It seems like 12 weeks off total is also the thing in Australia (according to a blogger who is a teacher in Australia), although those 12 weeks are distributed differently.

  7. Funny how your school schedule out there is pretty close to our schedule out here. Although I don't think we ever had to go back as early as August 20. If that happened to me, I'd be super-duper pissed, because then I'd have to go to school on my birthday.

    1. I'm sure there will be some who are in the same boat. I've never had that issue as my birthday is firmly in the middle of summer (although, I have subbed on my birthday).

  8. An end of the year excursion to Knott's Berry Farm sounds like something I would have enjoyed at that age. If only I'd gone to a school like that.

    1. No fun things for the end of 8th grade in your area? That sucks. (Although, we didn't do anything, either, and I grew up not far away from this school.)

  9. Do you go on a break, too, when school lets out? Me, at 17, I probably would've wanted money to buy books. :-)

    1. I have offered her a jellyfish in the past... Wait. Have I? Oh, you know, I don't know if I have. (I think it was more of a threat.)

  11. Yes to jellyfish. What 17 year old wouldn't want one? How are you feeling about the early start. We always start the second week of August here. And this year we got out on May 12 which I thought was ridiculously early.

    1. I'm ambivalent. It means a shorter summer (I'll get paid earlier), so that's good. But then we'll get out earlier...

  12. When we lived in Indiana, schools typically started the first week of August. They had realized that balancing the winter and summer breaks had a better effect on kids' retention. When you get whiners, explain that winter break will be longer!

Hey, blogging about not having anything to blog about is blogging! Good for you.

Your niece should ask for a spa day. You should accompany her.

    1. Yeah, it'll be nice to end the first semester before the winter break. But we won't be getting a longer winter break :-(

Niece lives out of state. I can't accompany her anywhere...

  13. I like Red's suggestion! I was going to say one of your beautiful scarves would be nice for a seventeen-year-old. ~grin~ Be well!

    1. She's getting a scarf... for Christmas. Yup, still haven't finished last December's Christmas presents.

I don't know if she'd want a spa day, but you live closer to her than I do ;)

  14. Oh my gosh! I cannot believe someone in your week was named Annointed. It's not April 1st but please tell me it's some sort of practical joke!

  15. Ah, nice to see that they were well-behaved preparing for their finals, and actually working!
Wishing your niece a belated Happy Birthday! :-)
