The Back Row

Kids don't like to sit in the front. If there's a choice of seats, the back row gets filled first. The front row gets filled last.

In the computer-aided design class at the continuation high school, the front row was for the "new" students. The "advanced" students had to sit in the back row. (The computers had different software loaded.)

What's funnier is in this class, the teacher doesn't stand at the front of the room. There's barely any room between the front row and the board. There's more room behind the students so he can look over their shoulders easily.

No matter. The students still avoided the front row. Which wasn't an issue until 4th period, where there were three students more than seats in the back row.

And the one girl who was "new" had claimed a back row computer. She pretended not to hear me when I told her to move.

It's not like they were working, anyway. (I know. I watched what they were doing from the spy software.) Deep sigh.

  1. Heh. I think I opted for far-side middle with my seating. Not front, not back, not in the center of the room. Of course, if the teacher rearranged us by last name, I'd get stuck in the middle (last name started with M).

    1. Lucky! When they did alphabetical, I got seated in the front on the side. Last name A really sucks for that.

  2. If it were alphabetical seating, I'd be in the front. If they flipped the alphabet, then I'd be in the back. As a college student, I chose to sit in the front. :D

  3. I never liked the front but the side was okay with me.

  4. Wow some days I'm amazed at your patience. It's a good thing I'm not in charge of children.

  5. It's funny how even adults will automatically avoid the front row. That spyware sounds PRETTY darn good!

    1. Oh, it is. They think they're being all clever, getting on the proper website when I'm behind them. But I walk away, sit at the teacher's desk, and I see them get right back to their games. And then they lie about it, thinking that I don't see.

      The coolest.

  6. Funny. I tended to go for the front row. Except at comedy shows. ~grin~ Have a great weekend!

  7. Wonder how many corporations use that spyware - and, in the corporate world, people still don't seem to like the front at CEO speeches. Some things never change. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I bet they have different spyware. I wonder who has the time to monitor employee web use, though...

  8. Much like how some people don't want to sit in the front row when they're at a comedy club, some kids don't want to sit in the front row. Maybe you should make a habit of calling on the kids in the back row and see what happens.

    1. Oh, the kids in the back row are more likely to get my attention...

  10. Yes, I always preferred the back so I could doodle in the margins of my notebook, or read something more interesting...

  11. I don't think anyone ever wants the front row for anything. I always try to go for the middle whenever I have a choice.

    1. It's weird. I guess we all feel like we did when we were back in school.

  12. LOL sounds about right. I usually go for the middle to back. I really don't like people behind me. But other than that I don't care too much.

  13. I would have been one of those kids aiming for a back row seat. I dislike attention and I feel like the front row says "look at me! Call on me!" It's not that I was necessarily bad. Though I am amused that there is spy software. Guess you didn't have to correct/redirect the ones that weren't working?

    1. Oh, I tried. But they ignored me. I'll keep lists of those who are off task and stay off task even after repeated entreaties from me to get to work.
