A Cheat

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. 😉

What if you won the game (or competition, or contract, or promotion, etc.) only to later discover that you had inadvertently cheated?

  1. Yes, I would let whoever is in charge, know what occurred. If I said nothing, it would only come out later and then I would look like a bigger schmuck. They could have placed that "cheat" in there as a test of my own character so I would say something because my conscience wouldn't allow me to do the opposite.

  2. I wouldn't be able to accept it. I echo Birgit's thoughts.

  3. I'd probably let people know because it's not really a win if it's not legit. But at the same time I'd be wondering why no one noticed and how exactly I managed to pull that off...

  4. I certainly wouldn't feel good about the win.

  5. I'd say something. But I wonder how you would inadvertently cheat?

  6. I like this crowd and would have to agree. ~grin~ I once left a home improvement store and realized the clerk forgot to ring up a $1 box of tomato fertilizer. Going back inside I found the incredulous clerk more annoyed than anything. ~shakes head~ Be well!

  7. Cheat to me implies intention. If I won something by accident, though, I'd say something. I've done so at the grocery store when they've credited me too much. Near every time they say thanks and just keep the money/item.

  8. How do you inadvertantly cheat? But, ignoring that question, I would not feel right. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
