Down Time

Last week I was back at the continuation high school. English class. They're doing a unit on modes of persuasion. There will be an essay they will have to write. But later.

On the days I was there, they were getting practice identifying ethos, logos, and pathos. By watching the film, Girl Rising.

But, to get them started, we first watched the trailer...

After, I asked them to come up with examples of ethos, logos, and pathos from the trailer...

"What? We were supposed to watch it? It's a trailer. You know, the thing that comes before the movie. We weren't paying attention..."

Because, apparently, I wasn't clear enough when I explained that they would be coming up with examples...

Fine. I offered to play the trailer again. At least they were able to come up with examples after a second viewing.

Do you enjoy watching movie previews? Have you seen Girl Rising?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. Hi Liz - I know the story about Malala and have written about her being so inspirational - as are all these women. I hope the class absorbed/learnt something from the trailer and film - the trailer showed a lot ... cheers Hilary

    1. Anything can be written about. I don't think they get that.

  3. I enjoyed the trailer and I identified examples of ethos, logos, and pathos. I had not heard of this movie before; it does indeed sound inspiring.

  4. I haven't seen the movie yet, it's on my list. But that sounds like a fairly easy assignment.

    1. You should have heard the yowls, though. Not from everyone, but the usual suspects needed to be spoon fed examples.

  5. I do enjoy watching the trailer but then it always gets me wanting more of the movie before it comes out. Down time - great D. I am doing the down time today. Seems my way of life, I do one day, pay the next.....but life is good out on the deck on this beautiful day waiting for storms to move in. Take care.

  6. I do enjoy watching movie trailers. It's like a game for me—see if I can guess what it is before the title is revealed. (I am weird, I know.)

I haven't heard of this particular film before...but it's on my list now. Thanks!

  7. You could spell it out in big, bold letters and tape it to their foreheads and send them a text and they still wouldn't focus the first time. KIDS!! I have three.

I'm a trailer junkie. I've found channels that are nothing but trailers and spent a lot of time watching them.

  9. I've not seen the movie but I've read about it.

I suppose we're all used to sort of tuning out the stuff that comes before the main video. I know I rarely pay attention to the preamble to YouTube videos.

    1. I get it. I do. But I explained to them beforehand that I wasn't showing the video just to show a video...

  10. I've not heard of this movie before, actually. I listen to music more than watch TV. And when we do, we fast forward through advertisements with the DVR my partner built out of a computer. ~grin~ Those kids...

  11. I only like movie previews if I'm in a theater. Otherwise, I skip them. But how typical they they don't realize that they need to watch it. Maybe if you texted them what they're supposed to be doing they'd actually pay attention to it.

  12. Glad they paid attention the second time!

    1. Well, the 2nd time they knew they had to come up with examples :)

  13. I rarely go to movies in theatres - it's so much easier to stay home and stream them. It's inspiring to see movies like this but it saddens me how much these girls had to suffer, while some in this country think education is a big joke. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I know, right? I think it's one of the reasons the teacher picked it. This is the school with the students who are most in danger of not graduating.

  14. No, you were just playing the trailer for the class for the heck of it, not for a lesson. I like J E's suggestion about texting them. That made me laugh.

  19. I love watching previews. It's the best way to know what you want to see or rent later on. We don't go to the movies much, but when we do we usually get there early, even for the weird trivia stuff they have before the previews.
