Betrayed

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

What if the one person you thought you could trust betrayed you?

  1. As a close you are trusted. You know me, you know my feelings, you know my thoughts and you hold my secrets. If you betrayed me then you have really over stepped our relationship. My feelings will be all over the place, up and down along with my thoughts of reasoning. My mouth tends to jump in first and I might say things that normally I would not say...but the jest of it, you betrayed me, we are done.

  2. It would be really hard for that person to earn back trust. I would forgive, because people are not perfect and they will let you down, but trust would be slow to return.

  3. I go with what Alex said. They would have to earn back trust and I'm sure there are certain things I had done before with them, i.e. sharing confidences, that I probably wouldn't do again for a long time if ever.

  4. That's the reason I don't trust anyone. :/

    1. Some people are truly trustworthy. It's just a matter of finding them.

  5. I trusted a close relative which was a mistake and my family was totally betrayed. I was in my 20's and it happened after my dad had passed since they would not have dared done what they did if he was alive. The only home I knew was lost, they were bad mouthing me, my mom and brother around the neighbourhood, a few pieces my mom left at the home was destroyed and they sided with the people, who bought the home, who were suing my mother for a door knob, glass shelving and a light. There is more but I will never associate with that side of the family except for the children who have no connection to this. It was horrible.

    1. Yikes. I don't blame you. That sounds horrible.

  6. I would be devastated. I don't think I would ever forgive something like that.

  7. I would be crushed. It would take me a long time to recover, and I'm not sure I could ever forgive it. (If I am sounding similar to J E Oneil - we must be thinking along the same lines.) Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  8. I am reminded of the 'spy network' that existed in the former DDR. Folk were encouraged/coerced into spying on family, friends, lovers, etc. After the wall came down, one was able to access and read their own case files, and determine who in their lives had reported on them. For example, wives and husbands found out that their spouses had compiled lengthy yet tedious reports on their whereabouts. I couldn't imagine anything like that happening to me, but, if it were to, then I'd have to cut the betrayer out of my life.

    1. I don't get how anyone could report on a loved one. I guess they really believed the government's lies.

  9. I think it depends on who the person is (child? sibling? parent? friend?) and why. The closer the relationship, the more inclined I'd be to forgive, depending of course on what the betrayal was.

  10. I probably wouldn't be able to forgive that person

  11. Ooh. What if it's yourself? In a way that's happened to my favorite OC. She didn't know she had shapeshifter genes, her widower father trying to protect his infant from a hell-bent 'shifter council. At age twenty-one, the leopard emerged and took temporary control. It gets ugly, let me tell you. ~grin~ Oh, BTW, thanks for commenting on my electrical issue. Actually I think it's something real because I had no issues for years other than lots of winter static discharge which I think is normal. Then the chip reader issue came up out of the blue. Normally my partner shops with me and pays for everything, so I forgot until today about this issue from months ago. I inserted my card into a big box store chip reader and nothing happened. Baffled that day, I finally used another card with no chip.

    1. Interesting answer. I hadn't considered that possibility.

    2. Darn. I was hoping you would have another suggestion. You are so smart and quick to suggest something. My partner insists seeing my 'mojo' in action. I'll let you know what happens.

    3. Oh, you meant my reply to your question! Silly me. I'm glad I stumped you all the same.

    4. As for the electrical issue, I didn't say your belief wasn't "real". It's amazing what we can control. How much of what we do is because we believe we can do it. Then again, maybe you burned out the chip with some static electricity...
