Almost Alone

Passing period before 3rd period at the continuation high school. The teacher was out chaperoning a field trip to Crystal Cove for their citizen scientist program. (There's a video about it here.) And I was awaiting all six kiddos on the roster.

And waiting.

The bell rang... and I was still alone.

I marked everyone absent. I couldn't quite believe I had a "free" period.

And then a student walked in. One student.

Well, one is better than none. At least I no longer felt like I was cheating.

  1. Hopefully that one student behaved himself.

  3. I wonder where those other kids were. Did they not bother to show up at school knowing everyone would be out on the field trip?

  4. Maybe the rest were annoyed about not being on the trip and that's why they didn't show up.

  7. Well that would be an almost free period! I think the other kids forgot to tell that one that they were not going to class and invite that one along with them..haha.....be my luck.

    1. Four of them were on the field trip, so the girl was invited but chose not to go.

  8. One is such a lonely number; glad you didn't have to be that lonely :)

  9. That would be weird. I tried to sign on to be a substitute in my district after I lost my regular job in 2009, but then things went awry with getting processed. That's okay--I wasn't really into it anyway.

    1. That's too bad. Oh, 2009. When they laid off a bunch of teachers. That's why. (A couple years there the sub rolls were filled with let go teachers, but most have been hired back now, and they're pretty desperate for subs.)

  10. That must have felt strange, indeed.

  11. I hope that student had something to do or else...what? Small talk?

  12. I've been in the awkward situation where I was the only student in class with the teacher before, hehe. They let me read for the whole lesson since there was nothing else to be doing.

    1. Once upon a time I had two girls in class. I let them play dots on the white board.

  13. Ha. Nice Mrs Roper gif.

Too bad that that one student showed up & ruined your 'free period'. ;)

    1. I was looking for the right expression, and then when the Mrs. Roper popped up. I'm such a '70s kid.

  14. Sucks to be that one kid that came to class anyway. *sigh* What would you have done if the girl hadn't shown up?

    1. Treated the period as a prep period. Which I pretty much did, anyway. (It's an hour "break" which is nice.)
