Complex Aroma Key

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

If you watch Killjoys, you'll probably have some idea where this question comes from...

What if we could unlock things (doors, safes, computers...) using our natural aromas?

  1. Depends how ripe those natural aromas!

  2. I don't know that I would want to go around unlocking things that way. But, it would be interesting!

  3. I bet it would be a lot easier to secure things. At least until someone found a way to mimic smells (which they totally would).

  4. LOL with Alex's comment. I'll agree with what he said.

  5. That would be interesting. It would suck if you switch shampoo/body wash/etc though since that might mean it wouldn't work any longer.

    1. I wonder if the technology could compensate for that.

  6. That's sort of a freaky thought. Doesn't body aroma change depending on what one is eating or how one's health is?

    1. Probably. (This is what happens when I'm low on ideas...)

  7. I don't know about opening a door or a safe or other things with aromas, but I did see someone clear a room with BO one time. Hummmm. Sorry. I guess that wasn't a PC comment--was it?

  8. Hmm...well, that's possible, right?! Biometrics are supposed to be the future...I don't see why scent couldn't be part of that.

  9. Then we would never be able to bathe, in order to preserve our natural, one of a kind stink. No thank you!!! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. No, bathing would have to be taken into account.

  10. Oh my...knowing some of my clients and their, um, smells, they could open Fort Knox!

    1. It would have to be a specific smell. That the locks already recognized.

  11. That's insanity. Can you imagine? The whole plant farming/perfume industry would become THE premier field to work in, and the most profitable by far.

  12. Yeah I'd wonder like some on how that would be possible with use of different products--shampoos, body wash, perfume, lotion, etc--since I change those all the time. Or like mentioned what you eat or even where you work how you can come home smelling like the food you were cooking or whatnot.

  13. Teenage boys would have to have specially designed titanium locks.

  14. This sounds kind of gross to me. I'm not sure I'd like it. What if you changed shampoo? Or tried a different soap? … What if you didn't shower at all? What if a burger joint popped up right across the street? I foresee problems. :-/

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
