To Explore?
At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)
Imagine that you've met an extraterrestrial race. The how or why isn't important, only that you now know there's a whole universe of planets to explore. Now, you have been given a choice. You can return to Earth and remain, or you can find a place amongst the star-faring races. Which would you choose?

I appreciate your comments.
I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.
*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.

I'd have to stay here because of my family and friends. Some of whom owe me money.
ReplyDeleteI would want to be among family and friends and familiarity so I would stay on earth :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Unless I could take my wife and my guitars, I'd stay.
ReplyDeleteFamily & friends win out over exploring...now if I had a terminal disease and I would not die if i went with them, i may be tempted. Also if i was in my 80's and everyone i knew was gone, I may go
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
DeleteDo the other planets have wifi?
ReplyDeleteAssuming they're more advanced than us (the space travel thing), I'd assume they have something better. And probably a way to tap into our communications if necessary.
DeleteI'd be tempted to explore lol! But then what happens if there isn't breathable air or all that stuff @_@
ReplyDeleteYou were taken to visit there already by alien species. It was habitable. And safe.
DeleteI will return to Earth and stay. I am not a very adventurous sort at my age!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't sound like many are.
DeleteI think I'd stay here. I like this planet. I'm not much of a wanderer, though!
ReplyDeleteSeems to be the popular answer.
DeleteI like to stay where i am. It is difficult to go to one planet and get used to it...
ReplyDeleteYes, true...
DeleteI'm a home body, and I don't reckon the frequent flier points would be all usable, but I might be being cynical.
ReplyDeleteI guess it would have to be something special to tempt you...
DeleteI get air sick, I'm claustrophobic and am afraid of heights, so I guess I'll stay home :)
ReplyDeleteAt this point in time, I would stay. If I was elderly, with my spouse and my friends gone onward, I would be tempted. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteAh, so you'd rather make the trip later. Interesting.
DeleteI'd probably stay. I love travel and all, but the great thing about travel is being able to return home. Essentially, that means stay. :) Besides, no one else is leaving. ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, I suppose if you went into space once, you could go back later...
DeleteLOL well me right this second I'm way too lazy. I just want to hang around the house and read and nap. But in general I'd be game for maybe exploring a little bit. I wouldn't want to stay out there permanently, though.
