Spider in Purple

No decision on the eye front. Thanks for all your suggestions. I like the rhinestone bead idea. Now I just have to figure out where to acquire some rhinestone beads.

(Since some of you have expressed a like of googly eyes, I may have to try that as well. There's no reason why I can't make several all with different types of eyes.)

This past week I made a spider in purple...

It was a request. I like how it turned out.

I delivered the spider to its recipient. (Yes, I am taking orders for these things.) That's when my 2-year-old twin nephews saw it.

When does one teach a 2-year-old the word "spider"? Because they knew what it was. And what to call it. And they wanted to get their hands on it.

Which would have been fine, except the legs have wires in them. To keep them positioned. And I'm not too sure that they would be safe for 2-year-olds.

For the next hour, I kept hearing the word "spider" followed by crying. *facepalm*

So, now I have two more to make. (Can't just bring the twins just one.) And no idea how to deal with the legs.

Well, at least the eye question is settled for them. No eyes. (I've seen what they've done with other things I've made for them. The eyes would be pulled off in no time.)

  1. Purple one turned out well.
The kids won't know the difference. Just let the legs flop.

  2. eyes would be pulled off,,,yes, they would. What if you sewed an "x" where the eyes would be. That would mean, of course, that the spider is dead, but then...

  3. I agree with Alex. Just let the legs flop. Wouldn't it be fun if there really were purple spiders??

    1. Oh yes. We should demand actual purple spiders.

  4. I see no problem with floppy legs, either. However, if you'd still like them to maintain some rigidity, perhaps small strips of cardboard would work? Or maybe knit eight pieces of I-cord using bulky yarn and much smaller needles. Yes, the purple one looks great. Have you considered purple and black stripes?

    1. Purple and black stripes? Oh, that's an idea.

I'm using a fairly small hook for the I-cord already. (I learned how to crochet the I-cord, so that's what I've been doing.) But that gives me an idea...

  5. What about pipe cleaners for the legs? The purple spider did come out cute :)

  6. I bet they'll love their spiders. Maybe you can get some sort of stuffing for them. They won't curve as nice as the wired ones, but I bet little nephews will like it. (smart call on the eyes)

  7. Two year old twin nephews! You can't get a more honest review than that. Clearly they loved the spiders. I think it's pretty awesome they can say it too. Definitely floppy legs and stitched eyes. Two year olds like to pull beads off and poke them into orifices :)

  9. Ooo, the purple one came out great! I'm partial to purple. I agree about the floppy legs. They might be fun for the boys.

  10. Love the purple! Don't put any wires in them, just let the legs flop around

  11. I like the idea of stitched eyes too and floppy legs. Kids that age eat things or can hurt themselves in other ways.

I like the purple too. And find it surprising that kids that age know the word spider.

    1. I know! I was shocked they knew what a spider was.

  12. I love the purple spiders - I would also vote for the floppy legs and the X's as eyes. Now you have me wishing I can remember if I still have the spider I made for my son years ago (crochet) - it disappeared a long time ago. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. This is crochet, too. If you can't find it, you can definitely find an amigurumi pattern online and reproduce it.
