Punishment

Photography class. Yes, they still have them. They still take pictures on film. And develop and print that film.

Because they had a sub, they had book work. (Liability issues.)

They're still doing prelim work before they really get to shooting pictures. The book work was review of exposure. (The teacher said she was planning on giving them a pop quiz the next week.)

The class was working really well. Some conversations, but on task. Some needed the whole period for the 30 questions. Some finished quickly...

"What am I going to do for the next half hour?"

I went to give her the 2nd just-in-case worksheet on aperture...

(The quickest way for a class to go out of control is for them to have nothing to do. Teachers fend off against this disaster by giving them long assignments. Or, they have that "extra" assignment for those who finish quickly.)

"I finished. I shouldn't get punished..."

But she wasn't being punished. She was probably going to get a bit of extra credit if anything. But that's not the way she saw it.

I explained that this was the stuff she needed to know so she could learn to take better pictures. She informed me that her pictures were pretty good already. (I rather doubt this.)

Ah well. I should know better than to try to explain anything to a teenager.

  1. You need to get that last statement tattooed some place prominently so you can remember that fact, LOL :) Son took a photography class when he was a senior. It seemed like a fun class (and I think his only A of the semester :)

    1. Not a tattoo, but maybe a plaque somewhere. Because, seriously, this seems to be becoming the theme of this blog.

  2. I agree with Betty...a tattoo would be great. I need one too! Can't win any argument with them!! Harley would love a photo class!

  3. In my opinion her mistake was asking "What am I going to do for the next half hour?" Chances are, if you ask a question like that, you're going to be assigned more work. You certainly can't expect the teacher to let you go early.

When I was in that situation in high school I simply started working on things that were due for my other classes. Sometimes I got in trouble for that, which is interesting to think about, now. But usually the teacher either didn't notice or didn't care.

    1. That's true. If she had just kept her mouth shut...

When students pull out work from another class, I generally notice, but I'm okay with it. It means they're using their time wisely and aren't going to get into any mischief. I only have an issue with it when the assignment I've assigned is due before they leave the room.

  4. Wow. Film. I wonder why they still do that. I didn't even know there was a place out there that still developed film.

I'd totally see extra work as punishment, too, extra credit or no. I understand the teacher's reasoning behind keeping extra work for them, but it can get totally overwhelming.

  5. A bad question to ask, there. A good sub will always have a back-up plan in her bag--math or map work.

    1. True. There were a couple students who quietly pulled out work for other classes. And I didn't bother them with the second assignment.

  7. I think that class is great! They get to learn the way to actually print film. For some reason, I have a feeling her pictures are probably quite good.

  8. Film is only going to be around for a couple more years. I was warned by one of 3 in the world who develops old film they won't be able to get the chemicals anymore. They now do them in batches every couple years. Very sad because I like using film.

    1. That is sad. I like the immediacy of digital, but using film is an art.

  10. Film photography-how I wish I could have attended a class like that when I was in high school. Alas, teenagers (like me, when I was young) think they know everything. Film photography may change but teenage attitude never will. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I did actually take photo when I was in high school. Pre-digital photography.

  11. Exactly. Teenagers know everything. I used to be one, and I remember. Then I grew up and realized I know nothing. Is that maturity?

  12. Liz,

You can't tell a teenager anything. Don't you remember being a teen? We thought we knew everything there was to know in those years.

We didn't have photography class when I went to school.

  14. You must have to have some real flexibility to walk into all these different classrooms with different subject matter. Seems like that could be a fun part of the job!
