Hears Everything

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements ;)

Almost a year ago I discovered a show called The Listener. It's a Canadian import shown locally on ION. It's about a mind reader who works with the police, or rather a federal law enforcement agency. I'm nearly caught up to the current season, but that's not why I bring it up. It brings up today's question...

What if mind reading was an employable skill? How would we use it? How would it change various workplaces?

  1. Ooooh this would be deadly:) I could see it being used in the CIA and FBI and also informants. If employers used it they may want to pit people against one another or find out who is the "bad egg" sort of speak. I like the Listener although I haven't seen it in a while

  2. Being able to read minds would be really handy in my job. Sometimes the people I speak to seem to expect me to be able to do that anyway, but I'm sure it would help me to help them better, which would make me look good as well!

  4. I'd like to see mind reading academies and all the training they have to go through to use it, something on par with medical school that just takes years and years and years. Then it's like, what are you going to specialize in? Reading the minds of criminals, reading the minds of business rivals, etc. Maybe there'd even be a group dedicated to helping people avoid having their minds read.

  5. I've seen the first two seasons of 'The Listener.' Mind reading would be useful for investigating criminal cases.

    1. We would just have to be careful how we used it.

  6. I haven't heard of that show; might have to check it out. I'm not sure I would want to read people's minds; could be interesting what is in there because I know what is in my mind, what I think and what I actually say sometimes are two different things, very far off the spectrum.

    1. I know I wouldn't want anyone reading my mind most of the time.

  7. I would listen in on everything said via thoughts and answer out loud, as if having a conversation. Scare everyone wild. Now, that sounds like fun in the office. Good question, Liz. I like it.

  8. If I knew someone was reading my mind, obsessive, random, weird thoughts would immediately start rushing into my brain and I'd be locked up in an insane asylum. I hope it never happens!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
