Universal Equation

It's Thursday, so it's time for my weekly random question...

I had Through the Wormhole on in the background again. This was the dark matter episode (I think this was the one), and one of the scientists was talking about finding the one equation that mathematically explains the universe. But, as usual, my mind wandered...

What if the whole point of our existence is to figure out the universe? What happens when someone finally finds the equation that explains it all?

Today's A to Z Challenge post brought to you by the letter...

  1. Interesting question. I have often thought something along these lines when I have asked myself 'why do we exist?' Because if we didn't ask that question, then really what is the point of us existing at all? What I am trying to say sounds so much better in my head...

    1. You should see me going through drafts of these posts. I get these ideas, but trying to boil them down to a question...

  2. I would love to incorporate a mathematical equation into on of my books. I don't like math, but I think the complexity of such a mind-blowing equation would be tons of fun to write! I believe words (the written Word of God=the Bible) explains the purpose of the universe and man:)

    1. I didn't say that the point of our existence is to figure out the universe. I said, what if it is? Of course there's more to our existence that just that...

  3. Do you think someone ever will? I have a feeling the answer is probably no... I also wonder if there isn't life out there somewhere else. Maybe they've figured it out and aren't telling us!

    1. I don't think we'll ever figure it all out. For a brief moment, I wondered, though...

  4. Very interesting questions...What if I told you I think I might have an answer to the question of the purpose of our existence? Ever since I was a small girl, I was taught the answers to questions such as "Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going?" If you're interested in knowing more, let me know... :)

I think we do need to figure out the point of our existence in order to understand where we're going after this life. Very thought-provoking questions you came up with.

    1. I don't know if we really need to know the point of it all. I don't know where some of these questions come from, really. I find it fascinating how everyone interprets it differently.

  5. Oh, I like this, Liz ... a post after my own heart. What happens, indeed, if we find the key that unlocks it all for us ... and is there a key? I don't know ... who does? but it's such a good question. We like to think we're here for a purpose, right? Maybe we are a small part of a larger issue (to help someone, to discover a cure, to help animals, whatever), or maybe we're just visiting here before a grand departure which takes us to other galaxies ... the possibilities are endless. And the beauty of it all is that I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, which makes the question all the more interesting. Excellent U post. I could've kept going ... :)

    1. Exactly. But it's a great jumping off point for a story...

  6. *shifty eyes* What are you talking about? No such thing could ever be possible. *rushed down the basement stairs to imprisoned scientists* HURRY, lock the equation down!

    1. I don't think we'll ever figure it all out. That's the beauty of the what if, What if?

  8. I think one of the reasons God put us here is to figure it all out. I don't think we will ever totally figure out, and I'm cool with that. Mystery is enticing, and drives our curiousity.

  9. After we figure out the equation that explains how things are the way they are, we have to figure out WHY they're that way. Or something similar. The thing about answers, is they always lead to more questions :)

  10. Well, that would sap all the fun out of life! we need juicy, untouchable mysteries to keep us going- at least to the next question and the next frontier.

  11. Can it be explained with just one equation???

    1. I guess it depends on the story. I think it'd be neater that way. (I wonder how complex that equation would be. Probably not very.)

  12. I think that it would be impossible to quench the human thirst for knowledge - even if THAT question was answered.

  13. I think if someone did find the equation, maybe then we would all self destruct? It would be interesting if that was our purpose to figure out the universe, because the way we get all involved in other things, jobs, family, sports, hobbies, etc., who would have time to do so?

  16. And, probably that's why some of us read Hawkings and Sagan and are comforted to know that even they haven't been able to figure it all out!

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
