Procrastinator

It was my last day in the eighth grade English class. (The way the subbing credential works, I can only cover a class for thirty days. Last Friday was day thirty.) I was hoping to get my grading done during the "office hour".

The school established an "office hour" in the afternoons so the students could get extra help on assignments and such. For the most part, the students don't utilize it. But, of course, on the day I really need no one to attend, several students needed my help.

Bentley had been doing well until the last couple weeks. She hadn't been in class for most of the previous week, and she hadn't turned anything in for a couple more than that. So, I was surprised when she popped up.

Bentley explained that she had been sick for about a month. (She didn't say she'd had the dread plague, so I assume it was just a cold.) And she said she'd gotten lazy. She wanted to know if she could turn in her missing assignments as now she was concerned for her grade.

Sigh.

The due date for late work had been pushed to that Friday due to the system crash, so she could still get work done. And I do applaud her for wanting to get something accomplished.

She's not the only one the procrastination bug bit hard this spring.

They're down to the wire now. As you read this, they're taking their finals. The year is over.

  1. It is crazy how time flies and we are at half of years and students taking final exams.

    1. I can hardly believe that summer vacation is almost upon us. (One more week.)

  2. I've read the term "languishing" used to describe how many adults have felt in the past months. Perhaps a case of languishing? Yes, let's hope it wasn't the "dreaded plague"; it can take a while to recover.

    1. It could be. She was doing very well until the last month. But then she blamed a cold for missing the deadline on their project. Sigh.

  3. If she was sick for a month, it must have been serious, even if it wasn't the you-know-what. Hopefully it's not contagious anymore.

  4. Gets close to the summer break kids tend to wander. I know my mind wanders more when the weather is nice.

    1. And yet, the weather hasn't been all that nice. We're into the gray days of spring where the marine layer doesn't dissipate until the afternoon. But they probably smell summer coming.

  6. Nothing like a deadline to spur desperation.

  7. I hope that she is able to get some work completed by the deadline! it's hard when you procrastinate but then get sick so you have even less time than you thought you would, haha!

Hope you are having a great weekend :)

    1. She did manage to get a surprising number of assignments completed. That's one of the bonuses of not being able to go anywhere, I suppose.

  8. What did Bentley come down with, I wonder...

    Mono?
    Covid?
    Regular ole cold?

    1. She said "bad cold". Could it have been something else? Sure.

  10. My eldest is a procrastinator and off to middle school next year. Great that the kids have a deadline for finishing up past assignments.. I'm sure it's not ideal for the teachers though.

  12. For me that time is now. We're in upper 90s everyday - today's "feels like" temp? 113 - and it's just sticky and gross. My desk is set up in the open plan area that is not air conditioned. Do I want to sit there and work? Heck no!
