Cruel Summer

At the heart of much speculative fiction (and fiction in general) is a question. What if? On Tuesdays I like to throw one out there and see what you make of it. Do with it as you please. If a for-instance is not specified, feel free to interpret that instance as you wish. And if you find this becomes a novel-length answer, I'd appreciate a thank you in the acknowledgements. ðŸ˜‰

What if we had another "year without a summer"? (It was a thing 203 years ago...)

  1. Well, I could handle that IF the season that came in the place of that summer was not a rough one. I don't do cold well, but I hate the heat and humidity of summer. So if that winter was replaced by spring and fall, I could handle it. What about you?

    1. Since we don't actually have a winter here...

    2. haha....I did not think about that. I still have problems remembering that Calif is so different then TN. I know it when I am there but when I talk with Cory I say things that I have to laugh at when he points it out to me. Took me forever to remember that he is 2 hours behind me on time.

    3. You don't remember the time difference? Of course, it's earlier for him than you.

  2. Hey, it's happened before and I am fine with that. Right now we are supposed to get more rain which is not good since there is flooding in Toronto, Ottawa (which got hit with a small tornado and a water spout yesterday!) but the temps are 15, 16C which is great.

    1. I'm not so keen on the flooding and tornados and such.

  3. I hate heat. I'm all over this.

  4. It would be bad for crops, but I'm with JE.

  5. We may already be heading there with the increasing imbalance of CO2 and O2.

  6. It actually is a scary thought considering that many farmers are not going to be able to plant their fields. So what if frosts in July destroyed main stream crops such as tomatoes and peppers? Or grapes? Blueberries? Do we then depend on Mexico?

    1. That's the other side of the question. We may hate the heat, but there are others who depend on the growing season.

  7. Would not mind since summer is brutal here.

  8. Currently living in Vietnam, so summer means that you cannot go outside without melting. Even in the middle of the night. So, no summer would be great if it was spring or fall instead. Still pretty warm, but quite bearable. But I would not want a Vietnamese winter. It is 90 straight days of rain.

  9. I think survival of the fittest would sort of cleanse the ranks of humanity. We just keep stuffing this planet to the point of bursting with more and more people. Maybe a giant ice age is what we need!

    1. It's crowded some places, but not others. Distribution of population is uneven.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
