Performance Review

"Oh no, not her. I hate her."

"She heard you..."

9th grade AP human geography. The students were outside looking in. It was passing period. It seems like there's always one who is not pleased to see me.

How did I offend a student already?

Oh, right. They were 8th graders last year. Yeah, I can see how I would have gotten on someone's bad side. I tend to come down hard on 8th graders.

I get worried when they're happy to see me. It makes me feel like I let them get away with something the last time I saw them. Hating me? It means I did my job properly the last time I saw them.

  1. That's a great attitude to have in their "hate" meant you did your job well. Good too for them to realize that a substitute teacher doesn't mean they can "walk" all over them.

  3. I always think it is successful when someone hates me...this means they couldn't get away with it..whatever it is. I have this happen at my work. these kids will grow up, get into debt and still try to do the same thing they did when they were kids

  4. Good for you, Liz. I'm glad you put links to earlier posts for context about the kids.

  5. You deserve a medal and it could say "My students hate me." with a smiley face on it.

  6. Good for you. Teaching is not a popularity contest (no matter what some think).

    1. It's nice to be liked, but it's not always possible.

  7. When I was a student we had some easy teachers and some tough ones. I always made it my mission to try to make the tough ones smile. Sometimes those efforts backfired because I didn't realize that what I thought was humor was really screwing off in class. I did get a smile out of a couple of them, though.

    1. It is a fine line. I find that some students who I really enjoy tell me that their teachers hate them due to that same sense of humor.

    1. Not as much as you would think. Some of them are pretty reasonable much of the time.

  12. I'm really glad there are people like you who are wonderful teachers and like what they do. Such a hard job, but so critically important!
