Performance Review
"Oh no, not her. I hate her."
"She heard you..."
9th grade AP human geography. The students were outside looking in. It was passing period. It seems like there's always one who is not pleased to see me.
How did I offend a student already?
Oh, right. They were 8th graders last year. Yeah, I can see how I would have gotten on someone's bad side. I tend to come down hard on 8th graders.
I get worried when they're happy to see me. It makes me feel like I let them get away with something the last time I saw them. Hating me? It means I did my job properly the last time I saw them.

That's a great attitude to have in their "hate" meant you did your job well. Good too for them to realize that a substitute teacher doesn't mean they can "walk" all over them.

Hi Liz - I can believe that ... they don't know what they're not taking advantage of ... have a good weekend - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteThis post makes me laugh. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad.
DeleteI always think it is successful when someone hates me...this means they couldn't get away with it..whatever it is. I have this happen at my work. these kids will grow up, get into debt and still try to do the same thing they did when they were kids
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah, I'm sure.
DeleteGood for you, Liz. I'm glad you put links to earlier posts for context about the kids.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve a medal and it could say "My students hate me." with a smiley face on it.
ReplyDeleteI think all subs should have that ;)
DeleteGood for you. Teaching is not a popularity contest (no matter what some think).
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to be liked, but it's not always possible.
DeleteWhen I was a student we had some easy teachers and some tough ones. I always made it my mission to try to make the tough ones smile. Sometimes those efforts backfired because I didn't realize that what I thought was humor was really screwing off in class. I did get a smile out of a couple of them, though.
ReplyDeleteIt is a fine line. I find that some students who I really enjoy tell me that their teachers hate them due to that same sense of humor.
DeleteEveryone likes you could possible be your a push over but the flip side no one likes you, well I would guess there a promblem some where.
ReplyDeleteI bet your an excelent teacher
Coffee is on
None of us can please everyone all the time!
ReplyDeleteThis is true.
DeleteI think I have a pretty thick skin but working with kids this age is beyond my abilities. ~grin~ Good job!
ReplyDeleteNot as much as you would think. Some of them are pretty reasonable much of the time.
DeleteYou’re not there to be their friend after all
ReplyDeleteThis is true.
DeleteI'm really glad there are people like you who are wonderful teachers and like what they do. Such a hard job, but so critically important!
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine the reaction if you responded likewise to them? Not that thrilled to see you either... lol
ReplyDeleteThat's a good way of looking at it.
ReplyDelete::snort::
ReplyDeleteHaha! I guess they can't get away with much when you're around!
ReplyDeleteI like to think so, but check out this coming Thursday's post for one of my failures.
